Abstract
Sermon notes by Edward Hitchcock for a sermon delivered at Amherst College in February 1853, alluding to the call to action in Isaiah 57:14 and asking his community to remove obstructions to the coming of Christ. Hitchcock considers the nature of these obstructions, such as too much devotion to worldly pursuits, low personal responsibility, prejudices over minor differences in a community, and overly formal religious services that are loathed as duty. Hitchcock notes the story of Achan in Joshua chapter 7 as an example of how one individual can be a problem for an entire community, and of how at times God must bring down judgment to clear away these obstacles.
