Abstract
Sermons notes by Edward Hitchcock for a sermon delivered at Amherst College in January 1848, reflecting on the meaning of wishing people happiness and prosperity for a new year. Using 3 John 1:2, Hitchcock concludes that Christians should consider the prosperity of the soul as primary, as it is the stem of all other prosperity. Outward prosperity without piety will not bring about the highest good for the individual or community. New year's salutations should therefore follow a Christian model and wish for the happiness and prosperity of others' souls. Hitchcock has listed hymns related to the sermon on the final page.
