Abstract
A letter to the editor of the Boston Recorder [Nathaniel Willis] in which Edward Hitchcock responds to a sermon by John Mitchell which was preached in Northampton and printed in the Recorder. A portion of Mitchell's sermon discusses the difference between "Benevolent" societies and "Moral" or "Reformatory" societies and claims the latter should be discontinued. Mitchell places the Temperance Society in that latter category, and Hitchcock takes umbrage at the Recorder's apparent support of this idea by printing the sermon. Hitchcock inquires of the editor whether the newspaper is indeed in support of Mitchell's stance and inquires whether it believes the American Temperance Society is illegitimate and not worth supporting. Signed "Philo Udatos".
