Envelope with notes

Bingham, Walter Van Dyke, 1880-1952

An envelope that probably contained transcriptions of Emily Dickinson's poems that were edited and published by Mabel Loomis Todd for Poems: Third Series. There are multiple unattributed notes written in pencil on the envelope. A note to the left of the address which was likely written by Millicent Todd Bingham states "Ms of Third Series showing Mama's corrections" and the years 1890 and 1891 are noted. The envelope was originally addressed to Mr. W.V. Bingham. Another unattributed note that is written above the address states "The worst is 'I heard a fly buzz.'"

Transcription of Emily Dickinson's "So well that I can live without"

A transcription of Emily Dickinson's poem "So well that I can live without." The transcript is written on an envelope scrap. The transcription is part of the collection of transcriptions of Dickinson's poems produced by Mabel Loomis Todd for publication in a volume edited by her. Most transcriptions are in Todd’s own hand; some are typed, and some were transcribed by other individuals. Editor's marks and notations are written on the transcript. A pencil line follows "So well that I can live without" in the middle of the envelope. Below the penciled line a stanza beginning "Auto da fe + judgment" along with a penciled note near the line and stanza states "'It makes no difference' Vol I." On the reverse side of the envelope scrap is a stanza which begins "How excellent the heaven" and is followed by a pencilled note that states "2nd stanza of 'It was too late for man' vol. I."

Transcript fragments of Emily Dickinson letters to Abiah P. Root

Transcript fragments of letters written by Emily Dickinson that may have been sent to Abiah Root. The transcription fragments are part of the collection of transcriptions of Dickinson's poems and letters produced by Mabel Loomis Todd for publication in a volume edited by her. Most transcriptions are in Todd’s own hand; some are typed, and some were transcribed by other individuals. The fragments have editor's marks, notes, and many have pieces that have been cut away. An envelope addressed to Todd accompanies the transcript fragments. A note on the envelope, written in blue pencil states that these are "parts of Emily's letters not to be published" and "A.P Strong" referring to Abiah P. Root Strong. Other notes are written in pencil on the envelope.

Hitchcock, Orra White, 1796-1863

A letter from Orra White Hitchcock to her niece Eunice Huntington (whom she addresses as "my dear cousin"), in which Orra White describes the details of her journey back to Amherst after visiting her daughter Catharine in Cincinnati. Orra White mentions the bad weather which delayed their train, the places they stopped along the way, and the snowy weather in Amherst on her return. The corresponding envelope is included.

Justin Perkins letter to Edward Hitchcock, 1854 October 10

Perkins, Justin, 1805-1869

A letter from Justin Perkins, a missionary in Persia, to Edward Hitchcock expressing his regret at Hitchcock's resignation as President of Amherst College. Perkins discusses his recently published anti-slavery sermon and its reception in the United States. Perkins expresses happiness that the marble slabs from Ninevah reached Hitchcock. Perkins informs Hitchcock that six of his seven children have died and invites Hitchcock to visit him in Persia. Perkins describes a Russian-Turkish battle from an account he received from a visiting London Daily News correspondent.

An envelope addressed to William A. Stearns, president of Amherst College, in care of Messrs. Reynolds, Mann and Company, in London, England. The writing appears to be in Charles Hitchcock's hand. There are several additional notes written on the envelope and his name is penciled along the side.

Two unattributed drawings done on opposite sides of an envelope. One drawing is of several boats near shore with buildings in the background. The other is of two sailboats and a steamer named "Seagull." It is unclear which of the Nelson brothers drew these scenes.

Wonders of the forest

An illustrated account of three brothers' (presumably the Nelson brothers) explorations in the woods written on a Globe Bible Publishing Co. envelope. Several excursions are briefly described in this account. The brothers set traps and chase squirrels, find flowers and play horse on a tree resembling the animal. The boys ask their mother to identify the flowers (Indian Pipe and Lady Slipper).

A letter to Helen Price in which Walt Whitman reminisces about Helen's mother, Abby, who had been a good friend of Whitman's until her death in 1878. He also gives Helen information on how to contact Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke, mentions his recent trip to Boston, and discusses his health, living situation, and family. The envelope for the letter is included as well.

An enveloped addressed to Thomas Donaldson of Philadelphia from Walt Whitman. The envelope bears postmarks from Camden, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Donaldson and Whitman had become friends in the 1880s. The envelope cannot be readily connected with a particular letter.

A letter to Charles W. Eldridge in which Walt Whitman discusses his improving health, hopeful that he is in recovery. Whitman also asks Eldridge to get and pay for a post office order he sent him, and asks him to write. The envelope in which this letter was sent is also included.

Envelope portion of letter from Jeffery Amherst to Eleazar Wheelock, dated May 23, 1763. The envelope is addressed to Reverand Eleazar Wheelock in Lebanon, Connecticut. It contains Jeffery Amherst's signature, date, and complete wax seal. The letter originally contained in the envelope is not part of the collection.

Charles Darwin letter to Edward Hitchcock, 1845 November 6

Darwin, Charles, 1809-1882

A letter from Charles Darwin in which he thanks Hitchcock for sending him a copy of Hitchcock's Final Report on the Geology of Massachusetts. He praises the work and states that Hitchcock's discovery of the "footsteps" is one of "the most curious...of the present century." Darwin also expresses his wish that Hitchcock "live to discover some of the bones belonging to these gigantic birds." Darwin mentions a piece he is preparing on the geology of South America, to be published in the summer.
