The notes discuss the geology of Massachusetts and descriptions of the terrain and the rock types. Drawings related to the geology of the state are inlcluded, and expenses incurred for May 1835 and September 1834 are listed. The first section of the diary lists scripture passages related to the deluge and destruction of the world. Several Latin passages from books, some of which are crossed out, are included within this section of the diary.

Hitchcock has included drawings complementing the notes about the geology throughout. Lists of miles traveled during the survey are included, as are lists of expenses incurred. While the diary entries only include up to January 1833, the mileage and expense lists include some earlier and later dates. The notes are not in strict chronological order.
