Amherst College

An administrative records book with an initial note by Edward Hitchcock, Jr. stating "at the burning of Walker Hall in 1881 the five or six volumes of strictly Faculty Records were destroyed. The makeup of this volume is a gathering of papers preserved on the files of the Secretary of the Faculty. 1827-1842." Included are documents arranged in six sections, each covering varying topics: the House of Students (also called Commonwealth of the College); the Athenian, Alexandrian, and Social Union student literary societies; student disciplinary cases; legal proceedings relating to James C. Stuart v. Theodate Corson; faculty papers, and undated papers relating to student expenses and the faculty. Among the records are student petitions, student confessions, faculty resolutions and responses, curriculum plans, committee reports, statistics on courses, student society assignments, acts, and regulations.

Charity Fund (Amherst, Mass.)

A Charity Fund Board of Overseers administrative notebook containing minutes of the annual board meetings from August 1822 to July 1871. Minutes vary in the details provided for each meeting, but usually include information such as the date of the meeting, the order of proceedings, names of board members present, names of those chosen for certain positions on the board for the year such as chairman or moderator, what reports were presented, and votes taken. Minutes are signed by the secretary or scribe at the time. Secretaries who contributed to the notebook include: Thomas Snell, Salem Towne, Cyrus Mann, Thomas Bond, William Hyde, and Christopher Cushing.

Amherst College

An unattributed handwritten subscription notebook for an Amherst College fund. There is introductory text that states that the subscribers promise to pay to the Trustees of Amherst College the sums affixed to their respective names and to pay the same within one year from April 1, 1833. Following this text, there is a register of subscribers which includes their names and pledged sums. There are additional notes such as "paid" or X marks next to some names and amounts and there are totals recorded on each page.

Collegiate Institution (Amherst, Mass.)

An unattributed handwritten subscription notebook for a fund for Amherst College, possibly the Charity Fund. There is introductory text dated January 28, 1822 in which it is stated that the Trustees of the Collegiate Charity Institution in Amherst express their thanks to those who have donated to the Charity Fund and provide information on the buildings that have been erected for the Institution. It states that all of the current or completed building projects including a college building for student accommodations, a house for the president, and a philosophical apparatus, could not have been done without the board going into debt. Thus, the Trustees feel confident that friends of virtue and literature will provide financial aid. Following this text there is a register of subscribers which includes their names, residences, sums to be paid, and four additional columns for the documentation of sums paid each year.

Copy of Lucius Boltwood transcript of Noah Webster notes on the history of Amherst Academy and Amherst College

Webster, Noah, 1758-1843

A notebook containing a handwritten copy of a manuscript by Noah Webster regarding the history of Amherst Academy and Amherst College. Included are transcriptions of manuscripts, reports, votes, pamphlets, speeches by Webster, and Zephaniah Swift Moore's letter of acceptance to the Amherst College Presidency, all of which were prepared and arranged by Webster in the original manuscript. On the last page of the notebook are details regarding its origin, including that the notebook is the 1862 transcription written for the College by the direction of W.A. Stearns from L. Boltwood's previous July 1834 copy of Webster's manuscript. It has been determined that L. Boltwood refers to Lucius Boltwood (Secretary of Amherst College 1828-1864) and W. A. Stearns refers to William A. Stearns (President of Amherst College 1854-1876). The original manuscript was prepared and arranged by Noah Webster from manuscripts, pamphlets, votes, speeches, and letters and with Webster's permission it was presented to the Trustees of Amherst College on August 2, 1836. The content of the original manuscript was also published in 1843 in Webster's book A Collection of Papers on Political, Literary, and Moral Subjects as the chapter titled "Origin of Amherst College in Massachusetts."

Hitchcock memorabilia volume covers

Hitchcock, Edward, 1828-1911

The front and back covers of a bound volume of memorabilia compiled by Edward Hitchcock, Jr. On the inside of the back cover are newspaper clippings from a November 15, 1871 "Trustees and Funds of Amherst Academy" editorial in The Amherst Record in which a trustee of Amherst Academy writes regarding a discussion at the previous week's town meeting about the funds of Amherst Academy. He argues that the funds should be given to the "High School" or to Amherst College, not the town or public schools of Amherst. There are unattributed notes in pencil inside both covers. The volume was disbound and the contents previously contained within are in Box 1 Folders 4-13 of this collection.

Edward Hitchcock geological survey notebook, 1830 October 1 to 1831 October 28

Hitchcock, Edward, 1793-1864

A notebook kept by Edward Hitchcock during a portion of his geological survey of Massachusetts from October 1830 to October 1831. The notebook contains observations about the geology in various locations throughout the state with information about terrain and rock types. Notes about Hitchcock's travel are included, as are drawings complementing the notes about the geology. Specimens collected by himself and others are mentioned, and notes about texts related to geology are included.

Mathematics

Hitchcock, Orra White, 1796-1863

Orra White [Hitchcock's] mathematics notebook. The first page bears the date December 20, 1810 and a note written in pencil indicates that Orra was 14 years old. The notebook contains explanations and exercises relating to logarithms, chronological calculations and the calculations of eclipses. At the end of the notebook is a section titled, "Eloquence," containing excerpts from a speech made by John Philpot Curran reacting to a trial of an adulterer.

Hitchcock, Orra White, 1796-1863

A penmanship notebook created by Orra White [Hitchcock] containing samples of writing and embellishments. Writing samples include excerpts of works by Michael Bruce, Lord Byron and Thomas Moore in addition to other published works of the time. The samples were written on a school notebook. The back cover is printed with mathematical tables.

Hitchcock, Edward, 1793-1864

A notebook in which Edward Hitchcock has written slightly re-worded excerpts from Joseph Butler's "The Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, to the Constitution and the Course of Nature," as well as excerpts from volume one of Richard Watson's "A Collection of Theological Tracts," which contains tracts by John Taylor and Pierre Allix. Hitchcock's notes on the tracts include brief notes about the contents of specific chapters in addition to excerpts.

Hitchcock, Edward, 1793-1864

A notebook in which Edward Hitchcock has taken notes on the introductory essay by Albert Barnes published in some editions of Joseph Butler's "The Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, to the Constitution and the Course of Nature." This is number seven of a series of nine notebooks in which Hitchcock has taken notes on Butler's text. Barnes' essay was originally published as a review of Butler's text in the Quarterly Chrisian Spectator in the numbers for December 1830 and March 1831. Hitchcock's notes consist primarily of paraphrasing Barnes' text, with a few of Hitchcock's own thoughts throughout. Hitchcock has divided his notes into sections based on "lessons" that he has identified in the text. This section of notes continues lesson 24 from the sixth notebook and includes lessons 25 through 27.

Hitchcock's notes consist primarily of paraphrasing Butler's text, including summaries of Butler's arguments. Hitchcock has divided his notes into sections based on "lessons" that he has identified in the chapters, with most chapters containing one or two lessons. This section of notes includes lessons 13 through 17.
