Each sample is numbered, and most have an entry listing its type, its collection location, its condition, a description of its makeup, and analytical tests performed upon the samples with the results. Some soils from outside of Massachusetts are included in the analysis as well. The beginning of the notebook describes one of the tests performed on the soil samples. Most samples are numbered, and have an entry listing their type, collection location, condition, a description of the makeup, and analytical tests performed on the samples with the results. Hitchcock includes some additional notes about the experiments with some of his entries. Several sheets are inserted into the booklet, mostly containing calculations.
