Massachusetts. General Court

A pamphlet consisting of documents relating to a petition for financial aid made by Amherst College to the Massachusetts Legislature. The first statement is the petition written by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the Trustees, followed by lists of the legislators from the House of Representatives and the Senate appointed to the Joint Committee to whom the petition was referred, noted by clerks L.S. Cushing and Charles Calhoun. Also included is the report of the Joint Committee which contains financial information regarding Amherst College and is attributed to James C. Merrill, Chairman of Committee. The resolve states that aid will be granted. The last section contains the 1825 Amherst College charter. All other content included in the pamphlet is dated from 1831 to 1832.

A pamphlet of the March 1838 report made by the Joint Special Committee to whom was committed a petition made by the Trustees of Amherst College requesting pecuniary aid. The report is signed "by order of the Committee" by John C. Park. The report provides financial information regarding Amherst College. Following the report is the Committee resolve which states that pecuniary aid will be provided. An unattributed note in pencil after the resolve states "Defeated."

A pamphlet containing documents relating to a petition for financial aid made by Amherst College to the Massachusetts Legislature. The first statement included is the petition written by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the Trustees. The pamphlet also contains the report of the Joint Special Committee to whom the petition was committed, signed by M. Lawrence as Chairman of the Committee. The report provides financial information regarding Amherst College. Following the report is the Committee resolve in which it is stated that pecuniary aid will be provided. An unattributed pencilled note that appears after the resolve states "Defeated." Content in the pamphlet is from various dates in January 1837.

A pamphlet of the March 13, 1847 report made by the Joint Special Committee to whom was committed a petition made by the Trustees of Amherst College requesting pecuniary aid and a grant of land from the legislature. The report is signed "by order of the Committee" by J.C. Perkins, presumably Jonathan Cogswell Perkins. The report provides financial information regarding Amherst College. Following the report are lists of the members of the Committee from the Massachusetts House and Senate. Also included is the Committee resolve stating that pecuniary aid should be provided.

The first statement is the petition written by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the Trustees, followed by lists of the legislators from the House of Representatives and the Senate appointed to the Joint Committee, noted by clerks L.S. Cushing and Charles Calhoun. Also included is a report of the Joint Special Committee attributed to S.G. Goodrich as Chairman of the Committee. The report provides financial information regarding Amherst College, and it is noted as being accepted in the House of Representatives and sent up for concurrence by Cushing. Content in the pamphlet is from various dates in 1838 and 1839.

William Pomeroy Paine, Stephen Caldwell Millett, and Henry Augustus Homes letter to Charles Upham Shepard, 1832 April 11

A printed form letter dated April 11, 1832 in which William P. Paine, Stephen C. Millett, and Henry A. Homes write as a committee and on behalf of the Alumni of Amherst College. Preceding the letter is a list of resolutions passed at a meeting of the Alumni of the College on April 7, 1832. The resolutions pertain to the appeal made by the Trustees of Amherst College asking for assistance in raising fifty thousand dollars for the College. In the letter, Paine, Millett, and Homes ask that the recipient and all alumni donate to the cause. The letter is addressed to Charles U. Shepard and postmarked April 14.

Boltwood, Lucius, 1792-1872

A document in which it is noted that at a meeting of the Trustees of Amherst Academy it was voted that Heman Humphrey, Rufus Graves, and Nathaniel Smith, or any two of them, are hereby authorized to assign and convey to the Trustees of Amherst College all the real estate which has been given to the Trustees of Amherst Academy for the purpose of establishing the Collegiate Institution, and that Humphrey, Graves, and Smith or any two of them are hereby authorized to execute all such instruments and deeds as may be necessary for the aforesaid purpose. The document is noted as "a true copy of the record" and is signed by Lucius Boltwood as Secretary of the Trustees of Amherst Academy.

Williams College

Hubbard, Henry

A pamphlet describing the results of a meeting of men from Berkshire County that took place on October 6, 1819 regarding the proposition to move Williams College from Williamstown to Northampton, Massachusetts. The pamphlet begins with a description of the meeting and includes the resolutions that were adopted at the meeting. One such resolution is the appointment of Daniel Noble, Colonel Henry W. Dwight, and William C. Jarvis to a committee to prepare and publish an address expressive of the sentiments of the meeting. The pamphlet also contains this address to the public in which Noble, Dwight, and Jarvis advocate for Williams College to remain in Williamstown and address the arguments in the recent petition made to the legislature by the Trustees of Williams College which proposed that it be removed.

Collegiate Institution faculty resolution regarding the student petition against Lucius Field, 1822

Collegiate Institution (Amherst, Mass.)

A document stating that at a meeting of the faculty of the Collegiate Institution it was resolved that the petition of the Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman classes against the tutor Lucius Field cannot and ought not to be granted. The document lists the reasons for this resolution. It notes that the faculty also resolved that the claims made in the petition are groundless and slanderous and no student should have stated them or have consented others to stating them. The document goes on to describe the conclusions drawn by faculty after examination of the case. Finally, the document provides the faculty's conclusions in regards to punishment of students. It states that the faculty has decided to treat the students with paternal tenderness and expect the good sense of the students will prevail after time for reflection, but should there be any further disorder or disrespect to the officers of the Institution, the faulty will proceed to notice them with all the severity required. There is another version of this document with slight modifications in Box 1 Folder 65 of this collection. The student petition referred to in this document is in Box 1 Folder 7 of this collection.

Collegiate Institution faculty resolution regarding the senior class final examinations, 1824 July 21

Humphrey, Heman, 1779-1861

A document in which Heman Humphrey writes on behalf of the faculty of the Collegiate Institution regarding the examination of the senior class in all the studies of their four year course. Humphrey notes the time and date of the examination and names the men who were examined. He comments on the performance of the students. Humphrey goes on to say that the faculty records it as their unanimous opinion that all of the named students have now finished the course of classical studies usually found in colleges and are thereby entitled to the usual college honors. An additional note below Humphrey's signature states "Senior Examination 1824."

Collegiate Institution faculty resolution regarding Ephraim Eveleth and Eveleth's signed retraction, 1824 June 28

Humphrey, Heman, 1779-1861

A document certifying that Ephraim Evelith is hereby restored to his previous standing in the Junior Class of the Amherst Collegiate Institution on the condition that he make a retraction. The document states that Evelith had been required to leave the Institution due to his disrespectful treatment of faculty. The retraction, signed by Evelith, is also provided. The retraction states that Evelith regrets that he said anything to imply that the faculty had made the junior appointments with injustice or partiality, and he regrets to have spoken in a derogatory way regarding any faculty. On the back of the document are notes stating "voted unanimously by the Faculty June 29, 1824" and "Evelith restoration to his standing in College." The document appears to be written in Heman Humphrey's hand.

Collegiate Institution faculty resolution to suspend Joseph Goffe, Jr., 1824 July 16

A document stating that at a meeting of the faculty of the Collegiate Institution on July 16, 1824 it was voted that Joseph Goffe, Jr., a sophomore, would be suspended from the Collegiate Institution and that the president would read the suspension in the chapel tomorrow morning. The document states that on the 12th Goffe left the Institution and the town although he had been told by the president that he did not have permission to go, and in so doing, Goffe violated the laws of the Institution. It goes on to state that in response to being asked to account for his disobedience, Goffe said that a student has the right to disobey the authority of the College when he thinks his request has been unreasonably denied. In response to this and his original action, the faculty votes to suspend Goffe for six months. The document appears to be written in Heman Humphrey's hand.

Collegiate Institution faculty resolution regarding the sophomore class examinations, 1824 August 23

Humphrey, Heman, 1779-1861

A document stating that the faculty of the Amherst Collegiate Institution voted that the examination of the sophomore class was satisfactory and that the performance of many members of the class was commendable. It goes on to say that a few individuals did not possess the desired level of knowledge regarding some studies but most of the deficiencies can be attributed to want of health and none were so great as to render any public exceptions necessary. It states that the whole class advance to the standing of Junior Sophisters. The document is signed by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the faculty.

A document stating that on May 10, 1824 it was voted that the late examination of the sophomore class of the Amherst Collegiate Institution was satisfactory. The document also states that "the faculty cheerfully express their approbation of the examination in general" and that the appearance of this class was better in some studies than in others. It states that in particular the faculty thought the examination of the class in geometry was unusually good and the appearance of the class in Jamieson's Rhetoric was not as good as desired. The document is signed by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the faculty. A note on the back of the document states "Result of the May examination 1824."

A document stating that at a meeting of the faculty of the Collegiate Institution it was voted that the annual examination of the freshmen class was highly satisfactory, though the appearance of a few individuals was not as good as that of the class in general. However, it states, the faculty do not think any exceptions are necessary and thus consider the whole class advanced to the standing of sophomores. The document is signed by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the faculty. A note on the back of the document states "Results of examination August 23, 1824."

A document stating that on May 10, 1824 the faculty of the Amherst Collegiate Institution came to the opinion that the junior class "generally acquitted themselves with honor" at their late examination. It also states that the faculty observed that many members of the class excelled. The faculty hopes that all will elevate themselves to "the sphere of unqualified approbation." The document is signed by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the faculty. A note on the back of the document states "Result of the May examination 1824."

Sweetser, Luke

A copy, attested to by Luke Sweetser acting as secretary, of the votes passed at a meeting of the Prudential Committee at the President's Library on August 3, 1839. The document provides the five votes that were passed, all of which relate to providing recommendations to the Trustees of the College on various topics. The Alexandrian Society permission to rent rooms, the laws of the College relating to student bonds, the debts of the College, the choice of a Financier and a Treasurer, and the salary of Professor Tyler are among the subjects addressed. The vote regarding Professor Tyler, presumably William Seymour Tyler, is discussed in the most detail. A note on the document states "to the Trustees of Amherst College Aug. 13 1839."

Edward Hitchcock statement regarding a student petition, 1832 April 15

Hitchcock, Edward, 1793-1864

A document in which, as directed by the faculty, Edward Hitchcock provides a statement regarding requests from a number of appointees for an "approaching exhibition" that they be excused from performing their parts. Hitchcock refers to the appointees making the request as petitioners and writes that some of them made the request because they objected to having to furnish refreshments for anyone other than the performers of the band. He goes on to say that other petitioners have asked to be excused because they cannot, with their previous engagements and their understanding of College laws, encourage such entertainments, especially should ardent spirit or wine be introduced. Hitchcock states that the faculty consulted the College laws, specifically Chapter 8, Sections 11 and 12, and cannot see the reasonableness of the petitioner's request. He goes on to say that executing the articles noted will remove the objections of the petitioners.
