Whitney scrapbook containing items collected during his freshman and sophomore years at Amherst College. Formats of the contents vary from printed materials (such as invitations, programs, tickets, receipts, clippings, and schedules) to handwritten materials (like letters and course notes) to other ephemera (such as flowers, fabric, billiard cloth, ribbons, and cigarette packets). Whitney has written annotations adjacent to some included items. Materials provide glimpses into student life at Amherst College. Some items pertain to student groups like the Social Union, Alexandria, Athenæ, Glee Club, or the College chapter (Sigma) of Delta Kappa Epsilon. Other materials relate to academics, personal finances, physical statistics, or to local and college events such as Mountain Day, lecture courses, athletic competitions, commencement, and musical performances. Some included items are from or pertain to students of Smith College and Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. William Belcher Whitney scrapbook, 1883 to 1885 Henry John Van Lennep scrapbook Van-Lennep, Henry J. (Henry John), 1815-1889 Henry J. Van Lennep scrapbook containing a compilation of newspaper clippings and sketches all attributed to Van Lennep. Clippings contain articles varying in topic, but many pertain to Christian religious texts and stories. The sketches are of people, animals, structures, carvings, places in Turkey, and include antiquities and historic sites. Most sketches are in pencil and some include captions. Also included with the scrapbook are two loose inserts: a sheet of additional news clippings on both sides and a full page sketch by Van Lennep. The newspaper clippings included on the loose sheet pertain to the slave trade and their authors are unknown. One item is Mary Hitchcock's calling card with a pressed plant that appears to be seaweed. Along with her name, "Hanover, N.H." appears on the card. The other item is a booklet of pressed plants (again, all apparently different types of seaweed), tied together with yellow ribbon and folded accordian-style. One of the specimens appears to have a starfish at the bottom of it. Mary Hitchcock botanical scrapbook and calling card to Sarah J. Cowles
