Volume of Amherst Academy catalog broadsides, 1816-1825

Amherst Academy (Amherst, Mass.)

A bound volume containing eight Amherst Academy catalog broadsides, dated from October 1816 to November 1819 and from November 1821 to August 1825. The catalog broadsides include lists of the Trustees, instructors, and students of Amherst Academy. The residence of students is also listed next to their name. The last broadside includes an unattributed handwritten note stating that it was "unearthed, & given by H.A. Gaylord of '72 Amherst College." Also included in the notebook is an unattributed handwritten table of contents and other notes.

Trustees of Amherst Academy administrative book that includes minutes of trustee meetings from September 1838 to November 1981. Minutes vary slightly in details included but often provide the date of the meeting, the names of trustees present, lists of the current trustees in order of year appointed, and the proceedings of each meeting including the votes taken, resolutions passed, and treasurer reports with details on the Amherst Academy Fund. Minutes are signed by those acting as secretary or clerk for the meeting. Secretaries who contributed to the notebook include: Levi H. Elwell, Lucius Boltwood, John S. Adams, W.S. Tyler, S.C. Carter, W.C. Esty, John M. Tyler, George Cutler, Thomas C. Esty, Francis H. Fobes, Frank Prentice Rand, Charles H. Morgan, Vernon P. Helming, and A.H. Dakin. Also contains occasional notes or resolutions regarding deceased trustees with details about their lives and work. Individuals specifically noted in these documents include George Cutler, Jr., Frederick Tuckerman, and John Mason Tyler. There is also a loose newspaper clipping titled "Recent Deaths" regarding George F. Mills, a receipt pertaining to W.A. Dickinson and the Amherst Academy Fund, a handwritten copy of the 1815 Amherst Academy charter, and a note stating that Amherst Academy records from prior to 1838 were burned in the February 1838 fire at Phoenix Row in Amherst.

A poem composed by Wm. H. Heath regarding love and the loss of it. Amherst Academy and the date are written at the head of the first page. Several lines appear to be transcriptions from hymns by Isaac Watts. The identity of Wm. H. Heath could not be determined.

John H. Wright and Seth W. Banister letter to Simeon Colton, 1831 July 6

Wright, John H. (John Harvey)

John H. Wright and Seth W. Banister letter to Reverand S. Colton (Simeon Colton) in which Wright and Banister write on behalf of the D.L.V. Society of Amherst Academy and state that the society voted on June 2, 1831 to request that instructor Colton attend all future meetings of the society. Wright and Banister state that in compliance with this vote, they transmit to Colton a copy of their constitution and invite him to attend the society's meeting that evening. The constitution of the D.L.V. Society no longer accompanies the letter.

Simeon Colton letter to E.W. Storrs, 1831 January 20

Colton, Simeon, 1785-1868

A letter from Simeon Colton to E.W. Storrs in which Colton writes regarding the sale of liquor. Colton quotes a Massachusetts state law passed on February 12, 1819 regarding the penalties to any owner of an establishment licensed to sell alcohol who provides liquor or allows the stay of any minor. After quoting the act, Colton states that as the guardian of youth in an institution in Amherst, he feels obliged to give formal notice that he will prosecute should any violation of the law involving elements of the Academy (Amherst Academy) come to his attention. A note at the top of the page written in Colton's hand reads, "Copy of a letter sent to the Retailers in Amherst Jany 20, 1831."

Edward Hitchcock, Jr. note in which he states that there were no Amherst Academy catalogs in the years 1844-1846 but during a part of this time Daniel T. Fiske and Jeremiah Taylor were in charge of the academy and Elizabeth C. Adams was preceptress. This note was previously in the "Hitchcock memorabilia volume," a bound volume compiled by Edward Hitchcock, Jr. The memorabilia volume was disbound and the covers are in Box 1 Folder 3 of this collection while the remaining contents are in Box 1 Folders 5-13 of this collection.

E.S. Snell (Ebenezer Strong Snell) note in which he certifies that Gamaliel C. Beaman has been a student at the Academy for about two years, and for a considerable part of that time under Snell's particular instruction. He goes on to describe Beaman's habits of study and moral and religious character. He closes by stating that he thinks Beaman "promises usefulness in society and deserves the patronage of the benevolent."
