Van-Lennep in which Edward Hitchcock belatedly expresses his thanks to Van-Lennep for sending him "The Oriental Album." Hitchcock describes his reaction to receiving the gift. Van-Lennep thanks Hitchcock for sending him a copy of his Final Report on the Geology of Massachusetts. Van-Lennep discusses the work and the quality of his drawings in it. Van-Lennep also devotes a large portion of the letter to the geology of "the Levant," a region consisting of areas to the east of the Mediterranean. Henry J. Van-Lennep mentions a donation to the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions that was given by students at Amherst College, asking that the money be used for whatever purpose Hitchcock feels is best. Van-Lennep also gives a lengthy description of his missionary work in Turkey, discussing those who are attending the seminary and the effect of the missionaries on the community. Van-Lennep apologizes to Hitchcock for not sending him bottles of wine Hitchcock had requested. Van-Lennep tells Hitchcock he is sending him 10 bottles, and lists them, their place of origin, and their age. Van-Lennep also discusses his travels throughout Greece, his thoughts about publishing something about these travels, his wish to travel more. Henry J. Van-Lennep letter to Edward Hitchcock, 1841 December 31 Van-Lennep, Henry J., (Henry John), 1815-1889 A letter to Edward Hitchcock in which Henry J. Van-Lennep talks about his travels through Europe and Asia, and describes in detail the geology of the mountains surrounding Mount Olympus. A drawing of part of the range is included, with notations on the type of rock in each section. Van-Lennep also tells Hitchcock that he is sending him a box of birds, which Hitchcock may wish to stuff. The list of birds is written on the verso. Henry J.
