Worcester letter to Edward Dickinson, 1839 February 15 Worcester, Samuel M. (Samuel Melancthon), 1801-1866 S.M. Worcester letter to Edward Dickinson in which Worcester writes regarding the remaining dues of an Amherst College student named Smith. Worcester states that as Smith was poor but exemplary, Worcester had endorsed his note so that he did not have leave the College without his certificate of graduation. He writes that since Smith is now dead, he will pay the amount on the note that remains due as he sees no other way it could be paid, though he when he endorsed it, he had no expectation of having to pay it. He explains that this will be difficult for him as he has relations that rely on him for support. Worcester states that Dickinson can take the first money that comes into his hand from the payment sent and Worcester will pay the rest in due time. An unattributed note at the end of the letter states "Prudential Committee votes not to exact the money August 1839." It has been determined that S.M. Worcester stands for Samuel Melancthon Worcester. The identity of Smith could not be determined. Samuel M.
