Edward Hitchcock letter regarding a Memorial to the legislature, 1848 January 6

A printed form letter signed by Edward Hitchcock in which he writes that the governments of several Massachusetts colleges will address a memorial to the legislature asking that the School Fund be increased. Hitchcock asks the recipient of the letter to endeavor to obtain subscriptions to the enclosed petition in aid of this "Memorial of the Colleges." A handwritten postscript clarifies where the recipient may send the petition after they have obtained names. The Memorial of the Colleges discussed is included in the pamphlet "Remarks at a hearing before the Joint Committee of Education, 1 February, 1848 in aid of the memorial of the colleges" in Box 5 Folder 18 of this collection.

W.B. (William Barron) Calhoun, Trustee of Amherst College, letter to College President Edward Hitchcock in which Calhoun responds to a letter from Hitchcock concerning the College presidency. Calhoun states that he has impressions concerning the fair condition of Hitchcock's health and the improved condition of the health of the College under the treatment of the State, and so he trusts that Hitchcock has abandoned the idea of quitting his post. He goes on to write regarding the Observatory at Amherst, mentioning a mechanic, J.B. Allen, and Professor Snell (Ebenezer Snell). Calhoun also writes about getting Professor Shepard (Charles U. Shepard) to deliver the annual discourse before the Agricultural Society on October 7th. The letter is pasted onto another piece of paper with an unattributed note at the top.

John Fiske letter to Edward Hitchcock, 1847 March 2

John Fiske, Trustee of Amherst College, letter to College President Edward Hitchcock in which Fiske writes in response to a letter from Hitchcock and discourages Hitchcock from resigning as President. Fiske mentions the recent donation of thirty thousand dollars to the College and suggests that Hitchcock make an attempt to establish his health by an absence of some months rather than by resigning. He also discusses the potential candidates for Hitchcock's successor. Fiske goes on to discuss a suggestion Hitchcock made regarding future aid to the College, a building that is about to be erected, and more regarding the donation, mentioning Mr. Vaill and Mr. Hitchcock of Brimfield. On two of the pages of the letter, Fiske writes sideways over his other text. It has been determined that Mr. Hitchcock of Brimfield is Samuel A. Hitchcock and Mr. Vaill is Joesph Vaill.

Bela B. Edwards, Trustee of Amherst College, letter to College President Edward Hitchcock in which Edwards writes that he will be unable to attend this year's annual meeting of the Trustees due to his health, but given that he has felt some interest regarding the library enterprise, the Trustees will perhaps pardon him if he makes two or three suggestions. Edwards goes on to provide three suggestions on the topic and explains his reasons for each. In doing so, he mentions Professor Jewett (George B. Jewett), the role of Agent of the College, the plan of erecting a building for the library, measures to procure library books, and a subscription fund attempting to raise twenty thousand dollars. The letter is pasted onto a another piece of paper with an unattributed note at the top of the page.

Bela B. Edwards, Trustee of Amherst College, letter to College President Edward Hitchcock in which Edwards writes regarding his objections to the proposal that the new library building be erected immediately south of South College. He states that Mr. Williston may have informed Hitchcock of a letter Edwards had sent Williston with his objections. Edwards lists five objections he has to the proposed site for the library including aesthetic taste, safety, accessibility (especially for women), and the sake of future generations. In his fifth objection he writes again regarding aesthetics and concludes that the matter of taste is where the College is weakest and needs to be strengthened.

Roswell D. Hitchcock letter to Amherst College President Edward Hitchcock in which Roswell writes to ask Edward to reconsider declining to preach the sermon Roswell had asked him to give on the 19th. He asks him to dispose of his engagements at the College so that he can be there on the 19th, elaborates on his feelings in this regard, and then goes on to write regarding the 27th. He states that he is sorry that Thanksgiving week is the same as with Edward and so a council could not be assembled either on that day or the day before. He closes by expressing his respect and affection towards Edward.

Edward Hitchcock statement regarding a student petition, 1832 April 15

A document in which, as directed by the faculty, Edward Hitchcock provides a statement regarding requests from a number of appointees for an "approaching exhibition" that they be excused from performing their parts. Hitchcock refers to the appointees making the request as petitioners and writes that some of them made the request because they objected to having to furnish refreshments for anyone other than the performers of the band. He goes on to say that other petitioners have asked to be excused because they cannot, with their previous engagements and their understanding of College laws, encourage such entertainments, especially should ardent spirit or wine be introduced. Hitchcock states that the faculty consulted the College laws, specifically Chapter 8, Sections 11 and 12, and cannot see the reasonableness of the petitioner's request. He goes on to say that executing the articles noted will remove the objections of the petitioners.

Edward Hitchcock "Supplement to the Ichnology of New England," 1862 December 9

Hitchcock, Edward, 1793-1864

A paper by Edward Hitchcock read before the American Academy of Arts and Sciences intended as a supplement to his "Ichnology of New England." The paper discusses issues related to the identification of fossil footprints and refers to the species with identifications that may be unreliable and that are doubtful, as well as new species which Hitchcock believes should be added. Hitchcock also raises questions about insect tracks and addresses questions about the number of phalanges in the fossil footprints discussed and whether the animals that created the tracks were birds.

Hitchcock lists several different examples of people approaching vacation with varying attitudes, and does the same with examples of people approaching death with various attitudes. It appears Hitchcock intends to expand upon what the results might be of these varied attitudes.

The excerpt expresses gladness at the reception the work has received in British literary journals and says positive things about the book. The "Paris correspondent" referred to may be Francois Joseph Jerome Nickles.

Three poems about geology transcribed by Edward Hitchcock. The original authorship of all three poems is unclear. The first two poems, "A Poetical Geognosy" and "Geological Cookery" may be by Robert Bakewell or John Scafe. The third is an excerpt from a longer poem published in the Christian Observer in 1834, which Hitchcock attributes to a Rev. Mr. Wilks in his "The Religion of Geology and its Connected Sciences".
