He mentions Mrs. Perkins' offer to delay the letter to the young lady of her acquaintance and says that given the decision no remark on his account is needed. Hoernle also writes regarding the governor's punishment "of those wicked assailants," his faith in protection from God, items Mr. Haas sent, and a music box and watch for Perkins' Mirza. In closing he remarks on Dr. Riach going to Tifflis and the weather in Tabriz. Hoernle letter to Justin Perkins in which Hoernle writes regarding the decision of their society (Basel Evangelical Missionary Society) to end their missionary labors in Persia. He explains the reasons why he is not being transferred to Ourmia (Urmia) but instead is going to Agra, a large "Moh." (Muslim) city in Bengal. He mentions Mr. Merrick's remark about a standing rule among the "A. Board of F. Miss." (American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions) that only Americans should be employed in their service. Hoernle also explains that he cannot spend the winter with Perkins as he must prepare and remarks on the expenses for Perkins' box to America. He expresses his similar desire and writes regarding the circumstances of his leaving. Hoernle discusses the difficult decision between leaving Persia or transferring to Perkins' station, especially in regarding to his improving his English or Persian. He mentions trying to visit Ourmia (Urmia) before he leaves and remarks negatively on the people, expressing his wishes that the Lord will guard and protect Perkins. Hoernle expresses his hopes that Mr. Haas will write to Perkins regarding the trouble with Solyman Chan, and discusses the possible poisoning of The Valiāt. He also writes about the current war on Herat, mentioning Sir Henry Bethune and sharing that some people say the King intends to make an expedition to Ispahan (Isfahan). He notes the passing of Mooharam (presumably the Muharram observances) and says he did not succeed in delivering the translation of Perkins' letter to the Governor before he started for Ooroomiah (Urmia). He writes that they have not received instructions from Basel (Basel Evangelical Missionary Society) yet, and so cannot decide on the time of their departure. Christian Gottlieb Hoernle letter to Justin Perkins, 1837 April 16 Christian Gottlieb Hoernle letter to Justin Perkins, 1836 January 14 Hoernle, Gottlieb Gottlieb Hoernle letter to Justin Perkins in which Hoernle writes regarding a variety of topics including his English language learning, the Perkinses reaching Urmia safely, their journey back to Tabreez (Tabriz) after they left the Perkinses, the Koordish (Kurdish) language and dialects, their conviction that a translation of gospel into Kurdish is possible but would be useless, their letter to the society (Basel Evangelical Missionary Society) expressing this conviction, the possible leaving of Mr. Haas and Mr. Wolters for Tehran, a musical box for Perkins, housekeeping, his headaches, and how they generally spend their days. He also discusses Gabriel who is leaving and their other Nestorian servant who also planned to return to Urmia. Hoernle says that he refused to allow him to do so until they found a replacement and describes beating the man after he said he was still going. Hoernle letter to Justin Perkins in which Hoernle relays that Perkins' boxes have departed this evening by the servants of Soolyman Khan and it is said the Khan himself is coming to "Oroomiah" (Urmia). Hoernle also remarks on his delayed departure from Persia and responds to news of Mrs. (Charlotte Bass) Perkins' fever and William's (Perkins) improving health. He writes of his faith in the Lord to protect them and goes on to respond to Perkins' inquiries regarding Persian news. He calls the country and its people miserable and shares that the King may intend to go to Herat again and the army is being mobilized. He relays news of a conversation between the Consul and the Ameer and provides his opinions on the possibility of the war. He also mentions Mr. Haas' troubles with Soolyman Khan. Hoernle to Justin Perkins in which Hoernle instructs Perkins to send him a letter in English which he will translate to Persian and deliver to the governor. He also writes regarding items Perkins' requested which Hoernle is now sending to him and lists the items and their costs. He remarks on the news of Perkins' son William's good health and shares news regarding the poor health of the Welliyāt (Valiāt). He says that it is reported that Kariman Mirsa gave him poison. In a postscript he says that his "pentograph" (presumably pantograph) is not a good one and recommends Perkins get a good one from his country. He explains that he did not return it yesterday as he was occupied with writing letters to Germany and could not find time to make it himself, but he had someone else pour oil on its wounds. He says that he supposes it will now fall asleep no more. Hoernle letter to Justin Perkins in which Hoernle thanks Perkins for his letter and good wishes for Mr. Shneider's (Friedrich Eduard Schneider) and his future destination in India. He says that Mr. (Johannes Theodore) Wolters hopes to have answers from their society (Basel Evangelical Missionary Society) after 4-6 weeks, and he will write to Perkins as soon as possible about the point in question. Hoernle remarks on "shlippers" he will gladly procure for Perkins and goes on to discuss the behavior of Perkins' governor (of Urmia) in the affair of the fellows who assaulted him. Hoernle letter to Justin Perkins in which Hoernle says that they have reached home safely, six days after they had left Perkins' circle at Ooroomiah (Urmia). He writes regarding the journey and mentions the German prisoner at Luldus, saying that they transferred the matter to the minister of the colony to which the girl belongs. Hoernle goes on to relay his re-affirmed decision to go to Agra rather than transferring to Perkins' mission, the decision of Mr. Haas to also decline Perkins' invitation to join him, and the decision of Mr. Wolters to delay in deciding until he has heard back from Basel (Basel Evangelical Missionary Society). He also remarks on the music box and the box of curiosities for America. Hoernle letter to Justin Perkins in which Hoernle discusses packages received and sent, including packets for Perkins, the globe Perkins sent him, items which Mr. Merrick has received, and Perkins' box of curiosities for America. He goes on to discuss the arrival there from Tifflis of the English ladies and gentlemen, children of Mr. Tailor at Baghdad. He mentions when the Wolters are expected and notes that the Amir has returned to the city, though Hoernle says he has heard nothing of the guns and clothes for Perkins' guards.
