H. Humphrey letter to Justin Perkins in which Humphrey writes regarding what they have heard of Perkins' mission, saying that when he left America the churches little thought that the way of the Lord would be so well prepared among the Nestorians. He expresses his hopes that the Lord will bless Perkins and goes on to write regarding what Perkins' should expect. He discusses the likelihood that Perkins will encounter difficulties due to "the god of this world," presumably referring to the prevalence of the Islamic faith. He discusses "the drought" in American churches regarding the Holy Spirit and interests in missions and notes his own improved health.

Compilation of Collegiate Institution statements regarding the petition for incorporation and the Charity Fund

Collegiate Institution (Amherst, Mass.)

A printed compilation of Collegiate Institution statements regarding the petition for incorporation. The first statement included is "To the Public," dated March 12, 1824 and written by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the Trustees in favor of granting charter. Other content includes sections titled "Residence of Students" and "Extracts from the Printed Constitution, to Various Copies of which a Charity Fund is Subscribed," dated June 2, 1824, as well as a note regarding the Charity Fund subscribers' petition in support of granting charter. A closing note from a Committee of the Trustees of Amherst Academy explains that they submit the foregoing together with a pamphlet annexed to the members of the Legislature. The Committee consists of Heman Humprhey, Nathaniel Smith, Israel E. Traske, Jonathan Going, and John Fiske. The pamphlet referenced no longer accompanies this item but is in Box 3 Folder 12 of this collection.

The Greenfield Gazette March 30, 1824 issue which includes an article titled "Amherst Collegiate Institution: To the Public" written by Heman Humphrey and dated March 12, 1824. In the article, Humphrey writes on behalf of the Trustees of Amherst Academy to give public notice regarding their petition to the Massachusetts Legislature requesting that charter be granted to the Institution. Humphrey presents six arguments in support of the charter. Also included is an article titled "Colleges" attributed to "an enquirer." The article discusses the idea that granting charter to Amherst College may injure Williams College, poses five questions about how Williams College would be injured, and argues that Williams College would not be injured.

A pamphlet consisting of documents relating to a petition for financial aid made by Amherst College to the Massachusetts Legislature. The first statement is the petition written by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the Trustees, followed by lists of the legislators from the House of Representatives and the Senate appointed to the Joint Committee to whom the petition was referred, noted by clerks L.S. Cushing and Charles Calhoun. Also included is the report of the Joint Committee which contains financial information regarding Amherst College and is attributed to James C. Merrill, Chairman of Committee. The resolve states that aid will be granted. The last section contains the 1825 Amherst College charter. All other content included in the pamphlet is dated from 1831 to 1832.

A pamphlet containing documents relating to a petition for financial aid made by Amherst College to the Massachusetts Legislature. The first statement included is the petition written by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the Trustees. The pamphlet also contains the report of the Joint Special Committee to whom the petition was committed, signed by M. Lawrence as Chairman of the Committee. The report provides financial information regarding Amherst College. Following the report is the Committee resolve in which it is stated that pecuniary aid will be provided. An unattributed pencilled note that appears after the resolve states "Defeated." Content in the pamphlet is from various dates in January 1837.

A pamphlet with excerpts from a report on the state of Amherst College presented to the Board of Trustees on August 21, 1826 and a report by Heman Humphrey with a specific plan for improvement based on the previous report that was presented at a meeting of the Board of Trustees on December 6, 1826. The pamphlet includes explanatory text regarding the two reports and the decision by the faculty and Trustees that the pamphlet be printed with information from both. It is also stated that the report by Humphrey was adopted by a unanimous vote of the Trustees.

Humphrey, Lathrop, and Banister provide an introductory statement regarding the financial history of Amherst College, the Charity Fund, and the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription. Following the introduction are two petitions made by Amherst College to the legislature in 1831 followed by extracts from speeches which were made when the second petition was discussed in the legislature. Extracts are attributed to Mr. Brooks, Mr. Fuller, Mr. Foster, Mr. Buckingham, Mr. Bliss (George Bliss), Mr. Calhoun, and the Speaker of the House. Humphrey, Lathrop, and Banister go on to explain that subject was indefinitely postponed in the legislature and after a meeting on March 6, 1832, the Trustees decided to ask the friends of the College for fifty thousand dollars. They go on to appeal to members of the public for financial aid. This item is similar to the pamphlet in Box 5 Folder 8 of this collection with some variations.

Warren.

Linus Child, Trustee of Amherst College, letter to College President Heman Humphrey in which Child responds to a letter from Humphrey informing him that Professor Warner (Aaron Warner) has consented to accept the chair of Professor of Rhetoric at Amherst College. Child also writes regarding other information Humphrey provided, namely that Mr. Barnes would decline the office of the President if it should be offered to him. He explains his delay in responding to this, mentioning Armstrong (presumably Samuel T. Armstrong) during his explanation. He goes on to say that he feels that they should desist from making any further attempts to select a new President as they have already made enough unsuccessful attempts to do so. It has been determined that Mr. Barnes is Albert Barnes. The letter is pasted onto another piece of paper with an unattributed note at the top.

Sam (Samuel) T. Armstrong, Trustee of Amherst College, letter to College President Heman Humphrey in which Armstrong writes regarding the proposal to grant David Magie an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Amherst College. Armstrong states that he is enclosing two letters asking for this. He notes that Dr. Armstrong is one of the writers of the enclosed letters he has mentioned, and the other is "Judge B." He asks for Humphrey's consideration of the request. The enclosures no longer accompany this letter. The letter is pasted onto a another piece of paper with an unattributed note at the top.

Boltwood, Lucius, 1792-1872

Lucius Boltwood, Solomon K. Eastman, John S. Adams, John Leland, and Luke Sweetser pledge in which they state that they are bound and obliged unto the Trustees of Amherst College in the sum of ten thousand dollars. They also state that Lucius Boltwood has been appointed Financier of the Charity Fund of Amherst College and detail the conditions of Leland's obligations in that role. The document is noted as signed, sealed, and delivered in the presence of Boltwood, Eastman, Adams, Leland, Sweetser, and H. Humphrey, whose signatures all appear on the item. H. Humphrey and John S. Adams presumably refer to Heman Humphrey and John Sidney Adams.

Copy of Heman Humphrey letter to the Anti-Slavery Society, 1835 January

A letter written by Heman Humphrey on behalf of and by vote of the faculty to the Committee of the Anti-Slavery Society in Amherst College in which Humphrey responds to the letter from the Anti-Slavery Society to the faculty, dated January 1835 and in Box 1 Folder 48 of this collection. Humphrey states that he shared this communication with the faculty and they were happy to find that it was written in the same excellent spirit as that of the memorial written by the Anti-Slavery Society previously. He writes that though the faculty has the kindest feelings towards every member of the Anti-Slavery Society, they agree with the opinion recently expressed by the student body of the Andover Theological Seminary that in the present agitated state of the public mind, it is inexpedient to keep up any organizations under the name of antislavery or colonization or the like in the literary and theological institutions. Humphrey goes on to explain the reasons for this opinion and responds to the society's objections to the conditions previously suggested to them by the faculty. He states that the Anti-Slavery Society must cease to exist just as the college's American Colonization Society has done already. He again states that they hold the members of the society in the kindest personal regard and are confident in their good principles and judgement. On the back of the letter is a note stating that this is a copy of the communication sent to the society.

Dana Clayes letter to Heman Humphrey, 1824 June 21

Clayes, Dana, 1792-1877

Dana Clayes letter to Heman Humphrey in which Clayes inquires, per the request of Daniel Blood, about the Collegiate Institution in Amherst. Clayes states that Blood is a beneficiary "of the Academy in this place," presumably Kimball Union Academy. On behalf of Blood, Clayes asks Humphrey about the costs associated with attending the Collegiate Institution and potential financial assistance. Clayes states that if the pecuniary circumstances at Amherst are as favorable as elsewhere, Blood thinks he will apply for admission next fall. Clayes asks Humphrey to direct a letter to Blood with the answers to his questions and writes in a postscript that Blood is a young gentlemen of decided piety and respectable scholarship.

Albert Barnes letter to Heman Humphrey, 1844 October 8

Albert Barnes letter to Heman Humphrey in which Barnes responds to the offer made by Humphrey and the Board of Trustees to appoint Barnes as President of Amherst College. Barnes discusses how honored he was by the offer and states that he knows the College has been a great blessing to the land under Humphrey's administration. Barnes goes on, however, to decline the offer and explain his reasons for doing so, primarily relating to his reluctance to leave his current position. He states that he thinks he can foresee that there would be peril to the harmony of the church in selecting another pastor and that the interests of religion in his city would be likely to suffer. He writes that another reason he must decline is that he feels it is his duty to preach the gospel. In closing, he prays that the Board will find a man who is qualified to fill the position and wishes Humphrey well.

Jepthah Bacon letter to Heman Humphrey in which Bacon writes regarding his son Peter C. Bacon (Peter Child Bacon). Jepthah Bacon explains that his son has been at Brown University but has now left and hopes to become a student at the Collegiate Institution. Bacon describes the circumstances of his son's leaving Brown, including a misunderstanding with Brown's president over Peter's need to have time off from college in order to work at a school and make money for funding the cost of his attendance. He goes on to ask that Humphrey receive his son into the Institution and states that he will be accountable for all lawful bills against Peter during his term.

Collegiate Institution faculty resolution regarding the senior class final examinations, 1824 July 21

Humphrey, Heman, 1779-1861

A document in which Heman Humphrey writes on behalf of the faculty of the Collegiate Institution regarding the examination of the senior class in all the studies of their four year course. Humphrey notes the time and date of the examination and names the men who were examined. He comments on the performance of the students. Humphrey goes on to say that the faculty records it as their unanimous opinion that all of the named students have now finished the course of classical studies usually found in colleges and are thereby entitled to the usual college honors. An additional note below Humphrey's signature states "Senior Examination 1824."
