A pamphlet containing a memorial presented to the Massachusetts Legislature by Edward Everett, Mark Hopkins, and Edward Hitchcock along with remarks made at the subsequent free conference held in the Joint Committee of Education session on the topic of the memorial. In the memorial, Everett, Hopkins, and Hitchcock write on behalf of the President and Fellows of Harvard College, the Trustees of Williams College, and the Trustees of Amherst College and ask that the legislature grant financial aid to the colleges in Massachusetts. Following the memorial are the proceedings of the private hearing of the Joint Committee of Education regarding the request. The addresses given by Everett and Hitchcock during the hearing are included. Additional remarks made by others such as William B. Calhoun, John Tappan, and S.A.
