She discusses riding about and reading letters from the Perkinses to farmers' families. She shares local news regarding the village of Amherst, mentioning multiple individuals and the tavern, Amherst House, (Amherst) Academy, the young ladies seminary, and the church. She also writes regarding the status of several Amherst College faculty. The letter is on stationery that includes a printed lithograph of Amherst College by Moore's Lithography in Boston and signed "H.G. Van Lennep" (presumed to be Henry J. Van Lennep). Howland letter to Justin Perkins in which Howland writes as secretary of the (Amherst College) association of Friends. He states the original and continued object of the society "to excite and perpetuate a missionary spirits in our hearts & in the hearts of those with whom we associate." He writes regarding their feeling that this object would be promoted by correspondence with missionaries and asks Perkins to write them something that will increase interest and be of value in directing their course. He also asks particular questions relevant to students interested in becoming missionaries and updates Perkins on the current status of the society. Also included with the scrapbook are two loose inserts: a sheet of additional news clippings on both sides and a full page sketch by Van Lennep. The newspaper clippings included on the loose sheet pertain to the slave trade and their authors are unknown. Some drawings include captions or detailed dimensions. Drawings are in ink or pencil and a few are colored. A newspaper cut out in the shape of a table or chair leg is affixed to the inside back cover and can be unfolded.
