The original gymnasium was built in Hitotsubashi, Kanda district, Tokyo by the Meiji government to train physical education instructors. The building was later moved to Otsuka, and eventually dismantled during World War II. The model was created in April 2011 by Takashi Ōbitsu in collaboration with the School of Engineering at Hokkaido University. It was constructed with Hinoki wood (Japanese cypress) and measures 25 cm. high by 36 cm. wide by 43 cm. long. Until the recreation was done, there had been only fragments of photographs to show what the building looked like.
