William Reed letter to Justin Perkins, 1836 January 2

William Reed letter to Justin Perkins in which Reed acknowledges favors received from Perkins and writes regarding funds for missionaries, the local Christian community, missionaries to the Sandwich Islands, and anxiety over the approaching end of Mr. Cozzens' term. Following Reed's letter and at a later date, S.W. Cozzens (Samuel W. Cozzens) writes to Justin and Charlotte Bass Perkins regarding the death of Reed and says that Mrs. Reed and Miss Hooper donated to the Board (American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions) so that both Justin and Charlotte could be Honorary Members. He also writes regarding their future plans after his pastoral term in Marblehead. Cozzens mentions a letter from Mrs. C. that will accompany this letter, likely referring to a letter from Abby Cozzens in Box 1 Folder 1 of this collection. An unattributed note on the item provides details regarding the Cozzenses.

Abby asks Charlotte about her situation, writes about Maternal Associations, and discusses the local state of religion. William Riach (Perkins), Sarah Chipman, Jane (Seymour), brother Wheelock, and Susan Stowell are all mentioned in the letter.

Cozzens letter to Justin and Charlotte Bass Perkins in which Cozzens writes regarding the Christian revival in Marblehead, their visit to Middlebury, and the trials the Perkinses' have suffered. He remarks on the box the Perkinses sent them and the second part of Justin's journal which he read in a concert. Cozzens discusses the local church and individual interest in both of them and in the Mission. He writes of their own and of the Perkinses' labors in saving souls.

Abby (Bass Cozzens) letter to Justin and Charlotte Bass Perkins in which Cozzens provides details on the death of the Honorable William Reed and says that Mrs. Tyler Reed (presumably Rebecca Blackley Reed) also died. She mentions Mrs. Tyler Reed's family members Rebecca, Mrs. Eastman, and Mrs. Woodbridge. Cozzens also writes regarding the children's Sabbath School, mentions Miss Hooper, and asks for information on the Nestorian Mission. She goes on to discuss her own family including her children Samuel and Charlotte, mention William (Bass), and remark that Susan Stowell is still staying with them. This letter likely originally accompanied a letter from William Reed and Samuel Woodworth Cozzens in Box 1 Folder 5 of this collection.

Cozzens mentions Captain Bray, Mr. Appleton, Mr. Gardner, their parents (Fidelia and William Bass), and their siblings Lydia (later Russel), William, and Jane (Seymour). On the last page, S.W. Cozzens (Samuel W. Cozzens) also writes to the Perkinses. He writes of their current journey to Middlebury, the revival in Marblehead, and local interest in the Perkinses.

Following Abby's letter, S.W. Cozzens (Samuel W. Cozzens) writes to Justin Perkins regarding Mr. Armstrong preaching on the Foreign Missions, his intention to get Justin an Honorary Membership of the Board, and his request to Justin for communications he can read in a monthly concert.

He goes on to write of the hopeful prospects of the Nestorian Mission and of what is going on in America in relation to politics, the "antislavery or abolition fever," and religion. Cozzens also discusses news of a smaller scale, writing about family, Marblehead, and friends in Middlebury. Lydia (Russel), (Martin) Van Buren, Edwards A. Park, Frederick Fowler and his wife, Mary Ann, Mr. Wheelock, and Delia are all mentioned in the letter.

Abby Bass Cozzens letter to Justin and Charlotte Bass Perkins in which Cozzens writes regarding Charlotte's prior illness, her son Samuel, a visit from their parents (Fidelia and William Bass), their sister Jane (Seymour), Cousin Frederick Fowler and his wife Mrs. Lockwood Clark, Sister Delia, and the deaths of Cousin Mary Ann, Uncle Fowler, Kinsman, Jane Grant, and the Perkinses' daughter (Charlotte Nisbet Perkins). Cozzens leaves the letter unsigned, and S.W.C. (Samuel Woodworth Cozzens) writes a closing paragraph explaining that his dear Abby asked him to finish as she was confined this morning with a daughter whom they will name Charlotte. Sarah Bass (later Crehore) has also written a message to Charlotte Perkins in the margins of the letter.

Samuel Dana writes to Charlotte Perkins at the invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Cozzens (Abby Bass and Samuel W. Cozzens) about the Perkins' voyage to Constantinople and Persia and their missionary labors. Dana hopes that letters from old acquaintances are welcome and notes their sufferings and his thankfulness that they have been protected and prospered and have been favorably received by the people "whose spiritual and immortal welfare" is the object of their mission, that their health and happiness be "precious in God's sight" and that their mission will not be in vain and that the members of his church think of and pray for them. Dana closes noting his health is still poor and mentions the marriage of his children Henrietta, Mary Dana, and Richard.
