S.M. Worcester letter to Justin Perkins in which Worcester says that he read part of Perkins' last letter from his pulpit and the next Sabbath he preached on missions. He mentions Perkins' remarks on the Concert of Prayer and details of his present situation and prospects. He gives updates about Amherst College and several individuals: Dr. Humphrey, Prof. Fiske, Mr. Tyler, and Edward Humphrey and his brothers John and James. He also remarks briefly on the aspect of religion in the country and asks Perkins to say a word on the privations of a missionary. Worcester writes about being the minister of Tabernacle and the church itself. He also shares family news.

S.M. Worcester letter to Justin Perkins in which Worcester responds to a letter from Perkins and news of his deep affliction. He briefly mentions the funeral service of Abel Lawrence and goes on to write regarding Perkins returning to Persia without his wife (Charlotte Bass Perkins). He writes about his own experience of Mrs. Worcester being in the McLean Asylum. He notes that he has not seen her in years and writes about her case, times when he thought he might move her elsewhere, and the cost. He shares his thoughts on Perkins' decision (about whether he should go to Persia and leave his wife in the asylum) and mentions Br. Treat.

S.M. Worcester letter to Justin Perkins in which Worcester notes that he read parts of Perkins' last letter in the last Monthly Concert. He writes about his church starting to hold concerts on Sabbath evening, a change he says many churches are adopting and the A.B.C.F.M. (American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions) is in favor of. He writes about the presence of the Spirit in his own church and the general advancing of other churches, especially in New England and Baltimore. Worcester notes that this year completes a century since Whitefield and Edwards were shining in the churches, and he shares brief updates on Amherst College.

The Essex Register February 16, 1824 issue which includes an article titled "Amherst College." The article provides the January 22, 1824 speech of Samuel Hubbard in the Senate on the report of a Committee in favor of granting charter to Amherst College. Hubbard references the petition requesting charter made by the Trustees of Amherst Academy, the petition made by the subscribers to the Charity Fund, and the memorial made by the Trustees of Williams College. He discusses the Collegiate Institution and Williams College and mentions Harvard. Hubbard argues in favor of granting charter. Another article titled "Amherst Institution" provides the distribution of votes on the topic of the charter.

Amherst College

The January 13, 1827 issue of the Salem Literary & Commercial Observer that includes an unattributed article titled "Amherst College." The article states that the Trustees of Amherst College have petitioned the Massachusetts General Court for financial aid, and the author of the article doubts that the legislature will be very generous on this occasion since the friends of the institution had given assurance that its funds were sufficient enough that there would be no need for an application for aid from the State. The article also discusses a recent report by the faculty of Amherst College to the Trustees regarding a proposed improvement in the system of academic instruction and study pursued there. Highlights from this report regarding proposed curriculum changes are given.

Worcester, Samuel M. (Samuel Melancthon), 1801-1866

S.M. Worcester letter to Edward Dickinson in which Worcester writes regarding the remaining dues of an Amherst College student named Smith. Worcester states that as Smith was poor but exemplary, Worcester had endorsed his note so that he did not have leave the College without his certificate of graduation. He writes that since Smith is now dead, he will pay the amount on the note that remains due as he sees no other way it could be paid, though he when he endorsed it, he had no expectation of having to pay it. He explains that this will be difficult for him as he has relations that rely on him for support. Worcester states that Dickinson can take the first money that comes into his hand from the payment sent and Worcester will pay the rest in due time. An unattributed note at the end of the letter states "Prudential Committee votes not to exact the money August 1839." It has been determined that S.M. Worcester stands for Samuel Melancthon Worcester. The identity of Smith could not be determined.
