On the back of the item are several labels including one on which is printed the name and location of the framer, George C. Newman, and one that includes an unattributed handwritten note identifying the child painted as E.J. Van Lennep.

Appointments for the Junior Exhibition, 1823 June 24

Collegiate Institution (Amherst, Mass.)

A list of appointments for the Collegiate Institution's 1823 Junior Class Exhibition to take place on the day of Commencement, August 27, 1823. The document includes students' names and their assignment of an oration, dialogue, dissertation, disputation, or poem for the Exhibition. Also included is a note on the maximum durations of the various exercises. The first page indicates that the list was created on June 24, 1823 while a note on the back states June 23, 1823.

The fight of the boys

Nelson, Arthur W., 1880-1958

Describing a hard-fought battle between East Siders and West Siders, "The Fight of the Boys" was written and illustrated, in color, by Arthur Nelson. The cover does not mention Arthur Nelson by name, but advertises that this work was written by the author of "The Mountain Fighter," a story signed by Arthur Nelson. The battle described in "The Fight of the Boys" was fought with "clubs, canons, wooden spears, wooden sords [sic], and bow guns." In addition to the heavy fighting, some prisoners are taken who later escape from the jail with help from the outside.

A letter to John Camden Hotten in which Walt Whitman thanks Hotten for sending him a copy of the edition of his "Poems" that Hotten is preparing, but notes that he is not pleased with the frontispiece and offers to obtain the original plate for Hotten at a cost of approximately 8 pounds. Whitman also asks Hotten to pass along his thanks to Algernon Charles Swinburne for his "William Blake: A Critical Essay," which included mention of Whitman in it. Hotten published both Swinburne's essay on Blake and Whitman's "Poems" in Great Britain in 1868.

Letter from Jeffery Amherst dated October 25, 1761 from Staten Island, New York. The letter is addressed to Colonel John Bradsteet, who was charged with organizing the local teamsters and boatmen to transport supplies along the waterways of the Great Lakes and upstate New York. Jeffery Amherst informs Bradstreet that Colonel Haviland and part of the 17th Regiment have arrived at Staten Island, New York. Amherst advises Bradstreet that he has granted the payment of eight thousand pounds sterling to Colonel Bradstreet's department and has notified Mr. Abraham Mortier of the payment. Amherst informs Bradstreet that the "Batteaumen, Teamsters and Waggoners" under Colonel Bradstreet's command will be paid in the same manner as last year, unless they have deserted.

Letter, marked as a duplicate, from Jeffery Amherst dated October 4, 1761 from Staten Island, New York. The letter is addressed to Colonel John Bradsteet. Jeffery Amherst advises Bradstreet that he has ordered men from the 17th Regiment to march from Albany, New York to Staten Island, New York. Colonel Bradstreet is directed by Amherst to provide sloops to transport the Regiment down river from Albany and to ensure they are supplied with the usual ten days provisions.
