The program for the 22nd Amherst College Commencement. Beginning with the program for the first Commencement in August 1822, commencement programs contain the order of exercises for commencement ceremonies. Since 1826, most programs also provide a list of candidates receiving their bachelor of arts degrees. Other information contained in programs has varied over the years.

A fragment of an unaddressed letter from Sidney Brooks in which he discusses his recently changed views on the influences of an investigation of the sciences on a person's fidelity to the sacred scriptures. Brooks notes that he has just retired from a hearing of scientific disclosures and closes with questions that have arisen for him such as "what is this world?"

Dana Clayes letter to Heman Humphrey, 1824 June 21

Clayes, Dana, 1792-1877

Dana Clayes letter to Heman Humphrey in which Clayes inquires, per the request of Daniel Blood, about the Collegiate Institution in Amherst. Clayes states that Blood is a beneficiary "of the Academy in this place," presumably Kimball Union Academy. On behalf of Blood, Clayes asks Humphrey about the costs associated with attending the Collegiate Institution and potential financial assistance. Clayes states that if the pecuniary circumstances at Amherst are as favorable as elsewhere, Blood thinks he will apply for admission next fall. Clayes asks Humphrey to direct a letter to Blood with the answers to his questions and writes in a postscript that Blood is a young gentlemen of decided piety and respectable scholarship.

A special supplement of the Nelson brothers' periodical "The Mountain News." The Premium List, "published by W.R. Nelson" and presented in a two-column format, is a fictitious catalog of books and toys for purchase or as reward for new subscribers. Each item includes a description and price and the toys are accompanied by illustrations. Books include stories of battles, sea life, and adventure. From among the toys offered, subscribers may choose toy boats, a toy steam engine, a fife or toy trains.

A March 11 issue from an unidentified year of the Nelson brothers' periodical featuring stories of rugged adventure from around their fictional world. The front page indicates the periodical was "published by W.R. Nelson." This issue, presented in a two-column format, begins with the conclusion of the story "Adventure on New Poplington" by Walter Nelson. In this story the ship Sunbeam faces the Indians, battling them upstream and eventually forcing their retreat. Oval Island features in the "Places of Note" section providing a detailed description of the island along with a map. The Second Battle of Poplington is described in the next feature recounting how Burt Green (sometimes referred to as Birt) and William Little are forced to retreat in defeat. The story is to be continued in a future issue. Concluding this issue is an extensive "Condensed News of the Week" section updating the readers on the explorations, agriculture and battles happening around their world. Included are New Poplington, Big Continent, United Division, Long Continent, Round Continent and Chipewa.

This issue, presented in a two-column format, begins with the first chapter of "Chased by Indians" where Hiram Dart hears the call of the Cherokee Indians on his way home from trading. The story is to be continued in a subsequent issue. The news section covers developments and happenings from around the Nelson brothers' world including Big Continent, New Poplington and others. The final page of this issue features advertisements for various imaginary companies.

A January 30 issue of the Nelson brothers' periodical from an unspecified year, featuring stories from around their imaginary world. The front page indicates this periodical was "published by W.R. Nelson." Beginning this issue, presented in a two-column format, is the second part of chapter 2 of the story "An Adventure on New Poplington" by Walter Nelson. In this segment, Joe and Harry have been split up and Joe fears that Harry has been "carried off by some animal." Joe finds a note hidden by Harry indicating that "the Indians are up the river come quick." The next section of the periodical covers news of the Nelson brothers' imaginary world including New Poplington and United Division, among others. The boys column instructs readers on the construction of a sail boat. The issue concludes with an account by Burt Green (sometimes referred to as Birt) of the battle of Poplington. Of note is a humorous quip on page two from a mother to a daughter regarding her romantic encounters.

A February 5 issue from an unspecified year of the Nelson brothers' periodical featuring stories from around their imaginary world. The front page indicates the periodical was "published by W.R. Nelson." Beginning this issue, presented in a two-column format, is chapter 3 of the story "An Adventure on New Poplington," by Walter Nelson. After being shipwrecked, Joe is able to scavenge a small boat from the wreckage and make his way back to General Allen's vessel and report for duty. The boys column instructs readers on the construction of a snowball cannon. Following this is the news section covering news and developments from around the Nelson brothers' imaginary world including New Poplington, United Division, Chipewa and others. "What I saw of the Battles of Poplington" is an account by Burt Green (sometimes referred to as Birt) of his facing Ethan Allen and the army of Big Continent. The final pages feature advertisements for several fictitious companies.

In this chapter Hiram hides from the Indians and makes it safely to Mountain City where he is welcomed by his worried family. The news section follows this story and covers news and developments from around the Nelson brothers' fictional world including Big Continent and New Poplington among others. The final page features advertisements for various imaginary companies.

The New England Chronicle, or, The Essex Gazette, June 22-29, 1775

An issue of The New England Chronicle, or, the Essex Gazette for the week covering June 22 to June 29, 1775, containing an article detailing news from London, delivered by the Lord Hyde packet-boat, in which Jeffery Amherst is publicly defended. A portion of the article relates the tale of an apparent exchange in a coffee house the previous year between Amherst and Colonel Washington. The writer notes that, while it is "the fashion" among the British royals to speak ill of Americans, Amherst should be respected for his service and conduct when he "covered and preserved the remains of the English army, after one of their defeats last war in North-America."
