Amherst College

The program for the 25th Amherst College Commencement. Beginning with the program for the first Commencement in August 1822, commencement programs contain the order of exercises for commencement ceremonies. Since 1826, most programs also provide a list of candidates receiving their bachelor of arts degrees. Other information contained in programs has varied over the years.

Seaman's Friend Society subscription list, 1840-1841

Brooks, Sidney, 1813-1887

A Seaman's Friend Society subscription list with an introductory explanation written by Sidney Brooks. Brooks writes that those listed agree to contribute the sums noted next to their names with the "object of making our president Dr. Humphrey a Life Director of that Society." Dr. Humphrey is Heman Humphrey. The subscribers listed all appear to have been students of Amherst College at this time.

Collegiate Institution faculty resolution regarding the sophomore class examinations, 1824 August 23

Humphrey, Heman, 1779-1861

A document stating that the faculty of the Amherst Collegiate Institution voted that the examination of the sophomore class was satisfactory and that the performance of many members of the class was commendable. It goes on to say that a few individuals did not possess the desired level of knowledge regarding some studies but most of the deficiencies can be attributed to want of health and none were so great as to render any public exceptions necessary. It states that the whole class advance to the standing of Junior Sophisters. The document is signed by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the faculty.

A December 16th (year not indicated) issue of the Nelson brothers' periodical that focuses on stories of rugged pioneer life from around their imaginary world, presented in a two-column format. The cover indicates the issue was published by E.H. Nelson & Co. This issue begins with chapter 3 of a four part story titled "The Border War." The story tells of two unidentified men sneaking past Union men. Following this story is a biography of their character Geo. Washington, president and founder of Forest Continent. The biography tells of his upbringing on Big Continent, his founding of Forest Continent and how he worked with William Little and Burt Green (sometimes referred to as Birt) after establishing his republic. Closing this issue are instructions for trapping rabbits by Burt Green that include diagrams of a box trap and a snare.

An issue of the Nelson brothers' periodical that focuses on stories of rugged pioneer life from around their imaginary world, presented in a two-column format. "The Pioneersman" was published by the fictitious E.H. Nelson & Co. and is presented in a two-column format. The cover of this issue features a detailed illustration of a cabin in the woods as well as a small poem. "The Treasure of Oval Mountain" is the story of two boys exploring a cave system in Oval Mountain where they discover a treasure store. In their excitement the two lose their way and are forced to spend the night in the cave. The story ends there, to be continued in a later issue. "Ten Nights in a Hunter's Camp" is a section that appears in other "Pioneersman" issues. This installment by Burt Green (sometimes referred to as Birt) is an account of a man canoeing to town in order to trade his furs. Along the way he is swept up in a high current and must abandon his canoe to avoid a waterfall. "A Tame Fox" is a story submitted by Frank Southerly about meeting a villager who had brought home a tame fox from a nearby river. "Defeated" is the story of two boys, Frank and Mark, and their conflict with their rival whom they call the Big I. The issue appears to be unfinished as there are blank column sections and a heading for a "Great Cities of The World" section with no content.

An unnumbered issue of the Nelson brothers' periodical that focuses on stories of rugged pioneer life from around their imaginary world, presented in a two-column format. The cover indicates the issue was published by E.H. Nelson. This December issue is winter-themed telling news and stories about the snowy world. The cover includes a table of contents and a short December poem. Opening the issue is "Sammie," the story of daily farm life for Sammie and his father reported by Burt Green (sometimes referred to as Birt). On the way to town for trading they see wolf tracks and upon their return home late in the day they hear howls and see creatures in the dark. The story is to be continued in a later issue. Following this is "Ten Nights in a Hunter's Camp," a story about a trapper's snowy encounter with bears. "Paradise Lake" describes in detail the lake east of Farmingtown. "A Skating Party" is a cautionary tale about two reckless boys who return to skating after hearing loud cracks in the ice. They fall in, are rescued, and face a long recovery to reflect upon their recklessness. Concluding the issue is a section of advice and news for farmers and an advertisement for the Nelson brothers' periodical "Chit Chat." There are several poems in the issue including one attributed to Ida Green, a fictional character that has authored poems in other issues.

A September (day illegible and year not indicated) issue of the Nelson brothers' periodical that focuses on stories of rugged pioneer life from around their imaginary world, presented in a two-column format. The cover indicates the issue was published by E.H. Nelson. This issue opens with chapter 2 of the story "Dick's Investment" by Burt Green (sometimes referred to as Birt). Dick and Mr. Knot make a trip to a trading post at Dugout several days ride away. On the way they encounter a mysterious animal during the night and make haste the next morning. They arrive safely in the city and return home without incident. The country of Chipewa is featured in the "Countries of Forest Continent" section. Chipewa is described as a forested country made up of mainly farmers and hunters. It contains the only Large Oak forest in the world and is not as developed as United Division, New Poplington or Mapleton. An editorials section covers new developments such as a gold and silver mine in Dugout and a new city near Allenstown. The issue finishes with a detailed description of the agricultural tent at the World's Fair. The tent displays many wonders including oversized produce and plants. Outside of the tent there is a large warship and a cannon big enough for a man to walk in.

A special December 23rd (year not indicated) Christmas edition of the Nelson brothers' periodical "The Pioneersman," that focuses on stories of rugged pioneer life from around their imaginary world, presented in a two-column format. The cover indicates the issue was published by E.H. Nelson & Co. Two Christmas tales open this issue. The first, "The Billings Christmas" is the story of the Billings family facing a tough holiday after their father returns home from woodcutting with a severe injury. The second son scores several turkeys on a hunt and surprises the family with Christmas dinner and gifts. "Christmas Day at Home" is the story of two brothers' adventures sledding and skating on Christmas day. At the end of the day a tree is brought in and decorated while one of the brothers plays Santa Claus. In addition to these holiday stories this issue recounts the discovery of Big Continent by Clumfield after having been lost at sea. Clumfield must fight off "the natives" and make a homestead, then claim the new land. There are two stories about hunting and trapping; one tells of two men out rabbit hunting and the other provides detailed instructions for trapping woodchucks. "How to Trap the Woodchuck" is written by Burt Green (sometimes referred to as Birt). These are followed by the story of Bill Small's boat racing adventures and a descriptive tour of the Nelson brothers' imaginary world. The tour describes the National Evergreen Park as established by Ethan Allen, among other Big Continent, Forest Continent, and United Division sights. Throughout the issue there are Christmas and other poems by the fictional Ida Green.

An issue of the Nelson brothers' periodical that focuses on stories of rugged pioneer life from around their imaginary world, presented in a two-column format. The cover indicates the issue was published by E.H. Nelson & Co. This issue opens with chapter 1 of the story "The Treasure of Oval Mountain" in which the reader is introduced to the characters and to the myths and stories that draw the boys to go looking for treasure. The story ends abruptly, to be continued in subsequent issues. A poem titled "The Brook" by Ida Green follows this story. Ida Green is a fictional poet whose work appears in several issues of The Pioneersman. The biographies section features a biography of Frank Warrington, an explorer from Black Archipelago. Warrington is sailing past Big Continent when he gets swept up in a storm at sea. He happens upon a new island and calls it the Kingdom of Rock Island. After an encounter with Ethan Allen, Warrington and his people must move and settle a new island across the sea from Round Continent. The issue concludes with detailed instructions for hunting crows.
