Beginning with the program for the first Commencement in August 1822, commencement programs contain the order of exercises for commencement ceremonies. Since 1826, most programs also provide a list of candidates receiving their bachelor of arts degrees. Other information contained in programs has varied over the years. Amherst College Commencement program, 1854 August 10 William George Howard, Joseph Haven, Jr., and Leander Thompson letter to the editor of the Evangelist, 1835 January 23 Thompson, Leander, 1812-1896 Letter from members of the Anti-Slavery Society to the editor of the Evangelist. William George Howard, Joseph Haven, Jr., and Leander Thompson write on behalf of the society regarding the January 17, 1835 issue of the Evangelist which included a copy of the memorial the Anti-Slavery Society of Amherst College had addressed to the faculty of Amherst College. They write that they were surprised to see it published and that they regret the accompanying editorial remarks which they feel were calculated to deteriorate the reputation of those they esteem as guardians and friends (the faculty of the College). They go on to say that while they don't wish to impugn the editor, they do feel that the publishing of the letter along with the private views of the gentlemen who forwarded it without the knowledge of any of the society members was unfair and unwarranted. They go on to say that it also is not a fair representation of the current state of facts between the society and the faculty. Thus, on behalf of the Anti-Slavery Society, they write that they respectfully disapprove of the course the newspaper took and they provide a public statement saying that the transmission of the document to the editor was unauthorized and undesired. The document, also called the memorial, discussed in this letter is presumably a copy of the letter in Box 1 Folder 47 of this collection. William George Howard, Joseph Haven, Jr., and Leander Thompson letter to the editor of the Evangelist, 1835 January 23 The war news, 1895 June 24 An issue of the Nelson brothers' periodical featuring military news of their fictional characters and places, presented in a three-column format and published by their fictitious enterprise, the War News Pub. Co. This issue opens with a detailed account of the Great Battle by Ethan Allen. In this battle that involves much of the Nelson brothers' world, Ethan Allen leads his troops to victory while instilling fear in his enemies. The issue concludes with summaries of war-related new from New Poplington, United Division, and Big Continent. The war news, 1895 June 24 War news, 1895 January 29 An issue of one of the many Nelson brothers' periodicals, presented in a two-column format and published by their fictitious enterprise, the War News Pub. Co. The Nelsons appear to have paid special attention to the illustrations in this particularly detailed issue and several include red and blue color detail. The opening story, "The Great B.C. Telescope," tells in great detail of a new telescope being mounted at the fictional Allentown. The story includes detailed illustrations of portions of the telescope. Other stories report on battles, trapping, naval and railroad developments, and a purchase by the Nelson Brothers of the seed stock of W.R. Nelson, seedsman, for the high price of 30,000 dollars. The main stories are followed by a profiles of the characters, skier Jimmy Allen and William J. Little (Arthur Nelson's alter ego). The issue ends with news briefs from around the Nelson brothers' world. War news, 1895 January 29 War news, 1896 November 13 An unfinished issue of the Nelson brothers' periodical featuring military news of their fictional characters and places, presented in a two-column format and published by their fictitious enterprise, the War News Pub. Co. The only complete article is "The First Fighting," an account of a major battle that caused losses for Long Continent and Round Continent. As with many other tales of battle, Ethan Allen features prominently in the story. The inside spread of this issue is blank except for column and header markings.
