Amherst College

The program for the 36th Amherst College Commencement. Beginning with the program for the first Commencement in August 1822, commencement programs contain the order of exercises for commencement ceremonies. Since 1826, most programs also provide a list of candidates receiving their bachelor of arts degrees. Other information contained in programs has varied over the years.

A copy, attested to by Luke Sweetser acting as secretary, of the votes passed at a meeting of the Prudential Committee at the President's Library on August 3, 1839. The document provides the five votes that were passed, all of which relate to providing recommendations to the Trustees of the College on various topics. The Alexandrian Society permission to rent rooms, the laws of the College relating to student bonds, the debts of the College, the choice of a Financier and a Treasurer, and the salary of Professor Tyler are among the subjects addressed. The vote regarding Professor Tyler, presumably William Seymour Tyler, is discussed in the most detail. A note on the document states "to the Trustees of Amherst College Aug. 13 1839."

Settlement on Round Continent. Chapter 2

Chapter 2 of a story about the colonization of the fictitious Round Continent. James Vertigo voyages to Round Continent and establishes a prosperous colony there. After some time, the inhabitants are threatened by Indians and the hero Donald Ferry saves the day. The final page does not seem to follow the narrative and it is possible that a portion is missing. It is unclear which of the Nelson brothers is the author.

Letter from Jeffery Amherst to Sir George Yonge, Secretary at War, dated January 15, 1793. Amherst writes to inform Yonge of the ill health of Insign Clarke of the 60th Regiment and request a leave of absence for Insign Clarke. Amherst enclosed a letter from Dr. J.B. Pearson, dated December 6, 1793, confirming that Insign Clarke is suffering from symptoms of consumption and is unable to join the Regiment in his condition. The identity of Doctor J.B. Pearson could not be determined.

Nelson brothers fragment from a story about Jimmy and Ethan Allen

A fragment of an unidentified story by one of the Nelson brothers, illustrated in color. This portion tells of the Nelson brothers' fictional character Ethan Allen and his son Jimmy, who are planting potatoes and beans. On the next page of text a Hen Hawk is spied and killed.

Notes for a Nelson brothers story

A short hand-written note, possibly for the beginnings of an unidentified story by one of the Nelson brothers. The note is written on the back of a letter from W.D. Boyce Co. inviting the recipient to become a local agent of the Saturday Blade and the Chicago Ledger.

An unidentified fragment signed by Elmer Nelson containing three completed stories and a fourth that is unfinished. "Blackbird" tells of a boy hunting blackbirds. This is followed by "In the Forest" where two brothers hunt a bear. The final completed story, "Fell In," tells of two brothers out fishing when they encounter a wolf. Following these stories is a detailed illustration of two women eating and, on the verso, the beginnings of a story titled "Lost in the Woods." The work may have been intended as another Nelson brothers periodical.
