Beginning with the program for the first Commencement in August 1822, commencement programs contain the order of exercises for commencement ceremonies. Since 1826, most programs also provide a list of candidates receiving their bachelor of arts degrees. Other information contained in programs has varied over the years. Amherst College Commencement program, 1869 July 8 Report on the petitions for the incorporation of Amherst College, 1824 Leland, Sherman, 1783-1853 A pamphlet of a report made by a Joint Committee of the Massachusetts legislature regarding the petitions for the incorporation of Amherst College. The report provides background on the petition and on Amherst College, especially in regards to the buildings, location, and financial state of the College. The Joint Committee states that it is their opinion that the prayer of the petitioners ought so far to be granted and that they have leave to bring in a bill. Sherman Leland's name is below the report and he is noted as chairman of the committee. It is also noted that the report was read before the Senate, accepted, and sent down for concurrence on June 3, 1824 by Nathaniel Silsbee, Senate President.
