Beginning with the program for the first Commencement in August 1822, commencement programs contain the order of exercises for commencement ceremonies. Since 1826, most programs also provide a list of candidates receiving their bachelor of arts degrees. Other information contained in programs has varied over the years. Amherst College Commencement program, 1976 June 6 Edward Hitchcock letter to unidentified recipient, 1834 March 17 Hitchcock, Edward, 1793-1864 A letter from Edward Hitchcock to an unidentified recipient (possibly T. Greene, J. M. Earle, or J. G. Totten) explaining that the Massachusetts government will be printing a second edition of his "Final Report on the Geology of Massachusetts" and saying this will allow for revisions to be made. He tells the recipient that if they have edits to their catalogue of shells they should send them along. He also discusses the format that the catalogue lists will take in this second edition and inquires whether that will be acceptable to the recipient.
