S.D. Stoddard letter to Justin Perkins in which Stoddard writes that she often thinks of Perkins in his loneliness but she is sure that he is happy in laboring for Christ. She thanks Perkins for telling her about Seir and the sacred spot on the hill. She goes on to discuss her and Miss Fisk's (Fiske's) visit to Mrs. (Charlotte Bass) Perkins. Stoddard says that her impression of Mrs. Perkins' situation is on the whole pleasanter since the visit. She mentions Dr. Tyler. She discusses a visit from Mrs. Stocking as Emily (Stocking) had to leave school for her health and writes about the Seminary (Mount Holyoke) and religious spirit there. She also provides brief updates on her stepdaughter Sarah.

H. Southgate letter to Justin Perkins in which Southgate notes that Perkins does not need to feel obligated to write Southgate letters of equal length to his own. He writes about (Jacob) Samuel leaving for Georgia, Samuel's future prospects, Samuel's proposed visit to Ooroomiah (Urmia), and the paper regarding Samuel that has been sent to Captain Todd to go to India. Southgate provides his opinions on a possible school in Tabreez (Tabriz), stipends for pupils of mission schools, and missionaries going abroad for education (natives of another nation, especially Muslims, going to the U.S. for missionary training). He responds to information Perkins provided regarding the improving health of individuals, taxes, and the account of Hoernle and Scheider's adventure. Southgate discusses Taliatine, his hopes to leave for Tehran soon, and updates on other missionaries: Mr. Walters and family, Pfander, and Kreis. In the letter, Southgate writes that he sends Perkins a copy of the paper regarding Samuel, but it no longer accompanies this item.

Benj Labaree letter to Justin Perkins in which Labaree writes regarding the likely delay of an ordination, mentioning Mar Yosip (or possibly Yosif), Eleeza, and Mar Yohannan. He goes to on to say that he will let Perkins know when he can get up to Seir to see to the stone cutter. He writes about the call from Latif yesterday, noting that Latif says he has not spoken against them or their work. Labaree also shares that Ali Naki Khan asks for another turkey, that Mar Yosip has made no reply to the letter from Botan, and that Labaree sent Odeshoo off with the letters. He discusses "another case of girl snatching by mussulmans" (Muslims) that occurred yesterday.

Charles Stoddard letter to Justin Perkins in which Stoddard responds to letters from Perkins. He shares his view that missionary work should principally have to do with the relations of men and God and little to do with other efforts at moral reform. Stoddard references the documents Perkins sent in response to misinformation from returned missionaries Messrs. Jones and Merrick. He writes regarding Merrick and assures Perkins that the Committee and officers of the Board (American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions) have full confidence in the Nestorian Mission. He also writes about his brother and sister-in-law (David Tappan and Harriette Briggs Stoddard) and current affairs in the United States: "the iniquitous project of annexing Texas as a slave territory," the controversy with Great Britain over Oregon, a lack of revivals, and Prof. Bush coming out as Swedenborgian.

Benj Labaree letter to Justin Perkins in which Labaree writes that Usta Khoda communicated with them from the Prince Governor to the effect that his Highness wanted them to be on friendlier terms. He says that his Highness' door keeper, Hassam Khan, later called. Labaree writes that they told him of their purpose to call and he is to inform them in the morning. He notes that Perkins will be proposed to make the call and he hopes Mr. Shedd will come also. He provides details on the location of the calling.

A letter from a correspondent with an illegible signature to Justin Perkins in which the sender references a letter he sent to Perkins regarding arrangements and says that they (presumably a society) will expect him Monday Evening to address them on the subject of his Mission. The letter may be signed by someone with the name Seate, Seatl, or Sealte.

A. Steedman letter to Justin Perkins in which Steedman references the note from Perkins that he received via Dr. Young. He writes about Perkins' heavy trial, Dr. Young's stay with them, and local discussions on the oppression of the Nestorians. He mentions the (British) Minister's appeal to the court of Persia on the matter, Colonel Hughes, and two natives of Oroomiah (Urmia). Steedman also writes regarding the deaths of Sir Culling Eardley and (Peter) LaTrobe, looking forward to the afterlife, family prayers for Perkins, Steedman's daughter Marion, his son Andrew, his son Henry, and English sentiment regarding the American Civil War. He notes that Henry Ward Beecher is there in this last regard and says that he is sure no Englishman could desire the triumph of slavery. In closing he mentions Birch and hopes that he may long be spared to work for their missions aid (the Turkish Missions' Aid Society).

Schauffler letter to Justin Perkins in which Schauffler says he has been occupied with having "an invalid family," having the Dodds in their family, and the sickness and death of Mr. Hamlin's child. He writes regarding their recent responses to one another and promises that Perkins will never again receive other remarks from him on Perkins' conduct unless he is under instructions to do so. He shares his private opinion that Perkins or his Brethren writing directly to the Ambassador is proper. He goes on to discuss a package, an article he will forward, and the post in general there. He provides a message for Brother Stoddard, references the watch for Mrs. Harris, writes about his wife's foot sprain, and shares updates on the health and travel plans of others.

Horatio Southgate letter to Justin Perkins, 1841 February 11

Horatio Southgate letter to Justin Perkins in which Southgate remarks on the many changes that have occurred since they used to correspond about Southgate's going into Persia. He says he will send Perkins a copy of his book and writes about Perkins' Mission. He remarks that the more he sees of these Christians, the more he feels they must be reformed in their own Churches. He shares his wishes that all, of any denomination, were united in preventing schisms. Southgate responds to Perkins' thoughts of visiting Constantinople, saying he will not be there as he expects to leave for Mesopotamia to see what can be done among the Jacobites. He notes that Mr. Brown was meant to accompany him but has disappointed him again. Southgate also writes of Perkins' importance to the Nestorian Mission.

H. B. (Hannah Bates) Smith letter to Charlotte Bass Perkins in which Hannah responds to a letter from Charlotte, remarking on the loss of Charlotte's dear babe. She provides updates on multiple individuals from Middlebury, Vermont. She also writes regarding the ordination of Mr. Robbins as a missionary to Sumatra and mentions other missionary friends. Subsequently, Henry Smith writes to Justin Perkins regarding his upcoming trip to Europe for his college (Marietta), the state of religion in the United States, the state of the A.B.C.F.M. (American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions), updates on individuals (other alumni of Andover Theological Seminary), and contributions to the college's Society of Inquiry from missionaries. In discussing the state of religion, Smith mentions the Presbyterian Church, the Taylorists, and slavery. In a postscript he writes at a later date, saying he sets sail tomorrow and congratulating the Perkinses on their treasure (a child).

Aaron Snow letter to Justin Perkins in which Snow says that he saw recently a notice of Perkins' return to this country (the United States). He writes that he read Perkins' two books, Eight years in Persia and the Persian Flower, to their Sabbath School. He explains that he wants Perkins to visit his new Island home and speak at their Sabbath School as he did to his school in Glastonbury. Snow provides his new address and writes regarding the location and travel to it. He provides updates on his daughters as well.

John C. Smith letter to Justin Perkins in which Smith provides their three objects in lithographing the Bishop. He says that after these are accomplished he could not object to the arrangement Perkins' proposes. In a postscript, he addresses P.S. Duval, Lithographer, requesting that they deliver Mar Yohannan, Nestorian Bishop, two hundred and fifty copies of his Lithograph from the stone sent by Mr. Fenderich. The letter itself is addressed to Perkins, care of Reverend Albert Barnes.

She updates Perkins on her health and writes about the people there, mentioning the memory of Mrs. Rhea. Shedd notes that Merta goes daily among the women. She says that she believes pious humble native women may accomplish much good about mountain women. She also writes about Charly's trials there and visits from Deacon Tamu.

He writes of the joy they both experience when their work causes sinners "to flee into the arms of Christ." He shares that he has been sending monthly compounds of extracts from circulars regarding the Missions of Oormiah (Umria), Turkey, and Syria in German to Dr. Barth, editor of the most read Missionary Periodical in German. He writes further about Dr. Barth. In closing, he says that he has not written to Basle (Basel Evangelical Missionary Society) and that he thinks Perkins better write to them.

H. Smith letter to Justin Perkins in which Smith says he is happy to receive Perkins' letter that was written in Brother Gregg's study. He references Perkins' visit and the letter from Perkins' wife to his own. He says he does not remember "the unfortunate metaphor of the sieve." Smith writes that he does not wonder that Perkins' heart is in Persia and remarks on the sad case referenced. He shares his own possible plans to go east, notes that the city is alive today receiving the legislature of Tennessee and Kentucky, and says that they delivered Perkins' message to someone whose name is written illegibly.

Benj Labaree letter to Justin Perkins in which Labaree responds to news of Perkins' journey and updates Perkins on business of the mission. He writes regarding the mission meetings over the estimates and the readjustment of their work. He provides details on the locations and responsibilities assigned to Cochran, Coan, Shedd, himself, and the Dr. He notes that he and the Dr. will now be responsible for the Armenian populations in various villages. He goes on to discuss the new English mission in Tabreez (Tabriz) for the "Mussulmans" (Muslims), Armenians, and Jews with missionaries Robert Bruce and John Tyler of the Church Missionary Society. He notes that the information on this mission comes from Deacon Syad. He writes about how many missionaries they should have in Tabreez, mentioning the Bible Society. Labaree also writes of private matters, including the selling of Perkins' house and article at Seir. He notes that they are thinking of opening a bookshop and discusses Miss Dean. Tears on this letter have been stitched together.

Benjamin Schneider letter to Justin Perkins in which Schneider expresses his faith in God that all of his family's trials are for their highest good. He shares that they were preserved from the plague but his wife became ill with typhus fever immediately after they were permitted to return to their house. He writes about her illness and how they thought she would die, mentioning the assistance of Sister Powers and Dr. Zohrab. Schneider adds that their house was broken into by robbers twice and discusses the events.

Susan F. Shedd letter to Justin Perkins in which Shedd writes regarding her recent visit with Justin's wife (Charlotte Bass Perkins) at the Asylum. She notes that Charlotte was pleased to see her, that she updated Charlotte on news of their friends, and that they talked of the bible and prayer. She shares their conversation regarding Mr. Richardson. Shedd says she has never seen Charlotte so happy "yet she bears the same marks of insanity as when she entered." She notes Charlotte's response to her asking if Henry's departure would cause her sorrow and writes positively of Dr. Tyler. She also writes about a call from Dr. Young, her own health, and her wandering son.

Charles Stoddard letter to Justin Perkins in which Stoddard responds to a letter from Perkins. He writes about Mr. Breath and says he hears very little of Mr. Merrick, noting the opposition from within and without that the Nestorian Mission has had. He expresses his anxiety over the effects of the repeated attacks on his brother's health (David Tappan Stoddard). Stoddard also writes regarding the health of Mrs. P. (Charlotte Bass Perkins), the Perkinses' daughter (Judith Grant Perkins), a lack of funds coming in (for foreign missions), and the separation from the old formal Armenian Church by the Evangelicals in Turkey. He notes that Perkins' has permission to publish the Bible as he desires.
