Jonathan Strong subscription promissory note, 1827 November 21

Jonathan Strong promissory note in which he subscribes to the fund commonly known as the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription. Strong pledges to pay the Trustees of Amherst College twenty five dollars either in one year from September 1, 1827 or in two years from that date with interest after one year. It is noted that this subscription is towards the raising of thirty thousand dollars in aid of Amherst College and that this obligation is void should the full sum of thirty thousand dollars not be subscribed on or before June 1 next year. It is also noted that the document is signed and sealed in the presence of Joseph Vaill, whose signature is on the item.

Salem Towne promissory note for Charity Fund subscription, 1822 November 21

Towne, Salem

Salem Towne promissory note in which he subscribes to the Charitable Fund, also known as the Charity Fund. Town pledges to pay the Trustees of Amherst Academy five hundred dollars on or before August 1, 1827 with annual interest from and after a date in August 1821. There are unattributed notes on the back of the item regarding Towne's interest payments from 1825 to 1839. One note references a receipt given by Noah Webster. The signature on the item appears to be "Salem Town, Jr." It has been determined that this is likely Salem Towne, an Overseer of the Charity Fund.

Volume of records kept by John Leland regarding Amherst College finances and funds, 1821-1835

A bound volume containing financial records of John Leland, Treasurer of the College, 1820-1835 and Financier of the Charity Fund, 1826-1833. The book includes loosely inserted booklets along with an account book and bound letters, reports, expense records, and fund subscription registers all pertaining to Amherst College finances. John Leland is presumed primarily responsible for the content, though Samuel F. Dickinson, John J. Jones, Rufus Graves, and Sally Ames (on behalf of a Mite Society) are contributors to individual documents in the volume. Also included is a letter dated 1888 from George S. Cheney to Mr. Seelye (presumably Julius Hawley Seelye) regarding a booklet of subscription records from Boston subscribers. Subscription registers included may pertain to the Charity Fund or the subscription fund commonly called the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription. The compiled records were bound together at an unknown later date "at the expense of Frank W. Stearns."

Thomas Bond receipt for Charity Fund subscription, 1819 August 7

Graves, Rufus, 1758-1845

A form receipt filled in by Rufus Graves, Financier of the Charity Fund, in which it is stated that a note of one hundred and fifty dollars was received from Thomas Bond, Jr. The amount is noted as his subscription to the Charitable Fund, also known as the Charity Fund. There is an unattributed note on the back of the item regarding the receipt.

Copper medal commemorating the British military successes of 1758

Amherst, Jeffery Amherst, Baron, 1717-1797

A copper medal issued to Jeffery Amherst to commemorate the British military successes of 1758. The face of the medal contains a bust of King George II. The reverse of the medal contains an image of Britannia on a cart drawn by a lion. Flanking Britannia are Justice and Liberty. Encircling the reverse of the medal are the locations of British military victories of 1758, clockwise in order: Louisbourg, July 27; Fronti [Frontenac], August 27; Duquesne, November 24; Goree, December 29; Senegal, May 2; St. Malo, June 16; Cherbourg, August 16. A second ring of names encircles the back of the medal, containing the names of the victorious British military commanders, in clockwise order: Amherst, Bradstreet, Forbes, Keppel, Marsh, Mason, Marlbro. [Marlborough], How [Howe].

Jacob Bigelow letter to Edward Hitchcock, 1817 April 22

A letter to Edward Hitchcock in which Jacob Bigelow discusses plant specimens and adds to the list of those he would like "Miss White" (presumably Orra White) to paint. He includes specific instructions regarding size and details. Included on the verso is a sketch of details of a corn plant, to be used as a guide.
