Lucius Boltwood, Solomon K. Eastman, John S. Adams, John Leland, and Luke Sweetser pledge in which they state that they are bound and obliged unto the Trustees of Amherst College in the sum of ten thousand dollars. They also state that Lucius Boltwood has been appointed Financier of the Charity Fund of Amherst College and detail the conditions of Leland's obligations in that role. The document is noted as signed, sealed, and delivered in the presence of Boltwood, Eastman, Adams, Leland, Sweetser, and H. Humphrey, whose signatures all appear on the item. H. Humphrey and John S. Adams presumably refer to Heman Humphrey and John Sidney Adams.

Thirty thousand dollar fund subscription booklet, 1822-1827

Collegiate Institution (Amherst, Mass.)

Collegiate Charity Institution subscription booklet for the fund known as the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription. The booklet includes introductory text dated June 28, 1822. A table of columns printed with headings for subscribers' names, residences, sums to be paid each year, and amounts paid for years 1823-1827 is given and is filled in with the appropriate details, handwritten. Most of the subscribers noted in the booklet are from Conway, Massachusetts and "Conway" is written on the front and back covers in an unattributed hand. There are also two financial notes on the back of the last page of the booklet, both signed by John Leland, Treasurer of Amherst College, 1820-1835, and Financier of the Charity Fund, 1826-1833.

Leland, John, 1807-1864

John Leland, Samuel F. Dickinson, and Lucius Boltwood pledge in which they state that they are bound and obliged unto the Trustees of Amherst Academy of one thousand dollars to be paid to said Trustees. They also state that on November 9, 1820 the said John, Jr. (Leland) was appointed by the Trustees, presumably as the Treasurer of the Collegiate Institution. They go on to elaborate on the conditions of Leland's obligations in the appointed role. The document is noted as signed, sealed, and delivered in the presence of Leland, Dickinson, and Boltwood.

Hannah Tyler promissory note for Charity Fund subscription, 1821 January 20

Tyler, Hanah

Hanah Tyler promissory note in which she subscribes to the Charitable Fund, also known as the Charity Fund. Tyler pledges to pay the Trustees of Amherst Academy twenty dollars on or before May 23, 1822 with annual interest from and after May 23, 1819. There are two notes on the back of the item, one from Charity Fund Financier Rufus Graves regarding Tyler's received interest and one unattributed note regarding Graves' signature and the provenance of the promissory note, including that it was presented in 1887 by George A. Plimpton.

William Tyler letter to the Trustees of Amherst College, 1842 July 25

Tyler, William, 1789-1875

William Tyler letter to the Trustees of Amherst College in which he writes regarding his subscription to Amherst College. He states that when he acted as an agent for the College he subscribed five hundred dollars payable in four installments and that he intended to save this money from his salary and not to pay it out of his property. He goes on to explain that since he made that subscription his circumstances have changed and he is currently without employment and has a large family dependent on him for support. He proposes to pay half of his subscription and requests that the Trustees exonerate him from the remainder of it.

Bronze medal commemorating the British military successes of 1759

A bronze medal issued to Jeffery Amherst to commemorate the British military successes of 1759. The face of the medal contains a bust of King George II. The reverse of the medal contains the coat of arms of King George II. Encircling the reverse of the medal are the locations of British military victories of 1759, clockwise in order: Quebec, Crown Point, Lagos, Minden, Guadaloupe, Niagara. A second ring of names encircles the back of the medal, containing the names of the victorious British military commanders, in clockwise order: Wolfe, Amherst, Boscawen, Ferdinand, Baring, Moore, Johnson.
