Amherst College

The program for the 83rd Amherst College Commencement. Beginning with the program for the first Commencement in August 1822, commencement programs contain the order of exercises for commencement ceremonies. Since 1826, most programs also provide a list of candidates receiving their bachelor of arts degrees. Other information contained in programs has varied over the years.

Zephaniah Swift Moore letter to Zenas Lockwood Leonard, 1822 July 31

Moore, Zephaniah Swift, 1770-1823

A Collegiate Charity Institution printed form letter in which recipients are asked to donate money to support the Institution. The letter is signed by Zephaniah Swift Moore and is addressed to Reverend Zenas L. Leonard of Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The letter details the founding of the Collegiate Institution and describes the Charity Fund, including the names of the Overseers of this Fund. It also discusses the current state of the Institution and a new subscription for the Institution. Below the signature of Moore are the terms of subscription, labeled "Form of Subscription" and dated June 28, 1822. The fund discussed in this letter and for which there is a form for subscription was commonly called the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription.

Collegiate Institution (Amherst, Mass.)

Collegiate Charity Institution subscription pamphlet for the fund that was commonly called the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription. The pamphlet includes introductory text dated June 28, 1822 in which background on the Institution and the fund obtained for its establishment is provided along with details on the obligations of undersigned subscribers to the fund. Subsequently, a table with columns labeled for subscribers' names, residences, sums to be paid each year, and amounts paid for years 1823-1827 is provided. The table has not been filled in.

Bronze medal commemorating the capture of Montreal, 1760

Amherst, Jeffery Amherst, Baron, 1717-1797

A bronze medal issued to Jeffery Amherst to commemorate the capture of Montreal, Québec in 1760. The face of the medal pictures a female figure of Montreal, seated mournfully at the foot of a pine tree. In front of her is a French shield with a fleur-de-lis and Native American weapons. Behind her, an eagle perches on a rock. Circling the face of the coin are the words: "Montreal Taken MDCCLX - Soc. Promoting Arts amd Commerce". The reverse of the medal contains a male figure, the River St. Lawrence, reclining, leaning against the prow of a ship. He is holding a paddle and a beaver walks over his legs. Above him is a standard bearing the name Amherst, circled by laurel leaves and surmounted by a lion. Beneath the man is a French shield and Native American weapons, lying on their side. Circling the reverse of the medal are the words: "The Conquest of Canada Compleated".
