The elder Hitchcock says that he is homesick and passes along messages to the rest of the family. Hitchcock's signature has been cut out from the letter. He also writes that he and his wife Orra White Hitchcock are both unwell as well. Hitchcock includes a long postscript about a porcupine and several other animals he is studying. He notes that an illness may prevent him from going and therefore asks Hitchcock, Jr. to pass along that information to Dr. Jacob Bigelow. Edward Hitchcock letter to Edward Hitchcock, Jr., 1852 December 4 Edward Hitchcock letter to Edward Hitchcock, Jr., 1850 September 25 Hitchcock, Edward, 1793-1864 A letter to Edward Hitchcock, Jr. in which his father discusses in great detail his anxiety about the state of his health and fear that he might not survive the return trip to the United States. Hitchcock instructs his son to seek reimbursement, if necessary, for expenses incurred by Hitchcock in his travels through Europe. Those travels, which involved visits to agricultural schools, were made at the request of the Massachusetts government and are detailed in the letter. Hitchcock is pleased to note that Hitchcock Jr.'s mother, Orra, has not been adversely affected by their travels. He also gives his son advice on how to approach his work.
