Hitchcock asks the recipient of the letter to endeavor to obtain subscriptions to the enclosed petition in aid of this "Memorial of the Colleges." A handwritten postscript clarifies where the recipient may send the petition after they have obtained names. The Memorial of the Colleges discussed is included in the pamphlet "Remarks at a hearing before the Joint Committee of Education, 1 February, 1848 in aid of the memorial of the colleges" in Box 5 Folder 18 of this collection.
