Number 1 of The Bat, a student magazine. In a section titled "The Cage," the editors state that the magazine is not intended to provide content relevant to "trite subjects of college interest" nor to "enter upon the field of literature" already filled by the present college press. Rather, its purpose is to allow "a healthy escape of steam," and only this one issue is to be published. Names of editors and some publication details provided on the title page are fictitious and presumably intended to be humorous. Entries in The Bat include short stories and poems which vary in tone from satirical to serious. The bat, 1897 March
