W.S. Tyler letter to Justin Perkins in which Tyler explains his delay in responding due to working on "Representative Cities" in Hours at Home and his double duties at the College as Professor of Greek and Walker Instructor in Latin in the stead of his son Henry. He writes about Henry and these duties. He mentions another son (John), who is at the Grande Ligne mission, and Madame Feller. Tyler thanks Perkins' for the responses to his interpretations of the "hard passage" about "the angels" and of "women speaking in meeting." He expresses his views on the latter topic and on the "alarming tendency in our age & country to efface the natural and desirable boundaries between the two sexes." He discusses Perkins' commentary on Genesis and goes on to write regarding Amherst College, a new building in Amherst, and local churches. He says he is sending the (College) Catalogue and Dr. Boardman's address at the last anniversary of Mount Holyoke Seminary, which no longer accompany this letter.

W.S. Tyler letter to Justin Perkins in which Tyler responds to a letter from Perkins and the information that Perkins' health is giving way. He remarks on his own health and labors and notes the new volume by Perkins on the Nestorian Missions issued by the Am. Tr. Soc. (American Tract Society). Tyler writes regarding "Plutarch 'De Sera Numinus Vindicta'" and The Theology of Greek Poets. He shares his views that all literature, science, and history illustrates the Bible. He writes regarding current Bible scholarship, discussing several authors, books, scholars, and the value of American and English scholars taught in German. Tyler goes on to answer Perkins' local questions about the change in location of the village church, the "Colored Sunday school," the current state of the old (Amherst) Academy building, and Amherst College faculty changes.

He goes on to note the start of the new year at Amherst College and writes regarding student enrollment at Amherst College, the growth of other New England colleges, and the growth of the town of Amherst with several new buildings. He also writes about an article titled "High Churchism against the Bible" in the N.Y. Observer with a review of a sermon by Dr. Parker of the Episcopal Church. In closing, he mentions that Dr. E. Hitchcock lost another child.

W.S. Tyler letter to Justin Perkins in which Tyler says that he thinks Perkins must feel at home with his Nestorian children though his sorrowing heart cannot forget his wife and child. He discusses the feeling of disappointment to which Perkins' alluded in regards to Enfield, mentioning the Woodses. He writes about what might become of the Missions of their American Societies during the war, the defeat of General Hooker, and information about the war from his son. He goes on to write regarding Amherst, Amherst College, and the upcoming marriage of Miss Hinsdale to the village pastor. He shares news of the poor health of Dr. and Mrs. Hitchcock.

He mentions Hitchcock's children Jane, Emily, and Edward. Tyler shares that the Trustees are holding an extra session about finances, the endowment, and the Pastorate. He provides other updates relating to Amherst College and discusses the excitements in town, including the Agricultural College and a new Episcopal Church. Tyler also shares news about the American Civil War and politics. He briefly notes Brother Schneider's losses and Miss Fisks (Fiske's) death.

Terry letter to Justin Perkins in which Terry writes regarding her marriage, her husband and his children, individuals from Amherst, the church and clergymen there, financial difficulties at Amherst College and contributions to the school, the last commencement at the College, its troublesome graduating class, personal insults to Professor Fiske by the class, revivals in the country, Miss Lyon's school in S. Hadley, marriages, births, deaths, her own church and Sabbath School in Hartford, a visit from the widow of Henry Lyman, and her own family. She also responds to information in a letter from Perkins. Individuals discussed in some detail in the letter include: Mrs. (Hepzibah) Eastman, Mr. Hunt, Mrs. Fiske, Mr. Sweetser, Miss Caldwell, and sister Boltwood. Many others are also mentioned.

D.W.V. Fiske (Deborah W.V. Fiske) letter to Justin Perkins in which Fiske writes that she is forwarding him a box of clothing made ready by his Amherst friends. She discusses riding about and reading letters from the Perkinses to farmers' families. She shares local news regarding the village of Amherst, mentioning multiple individuals and the tavern, Amherst House, (Amherst) Academy, the young ladies seminary, and the church. She also writes regarding the status of several Amherst College faculty. The letter is on stationery that includes a printed lithograph of Amherst College by Moore's Lithography in Boston and signed "H.G. Van Lennep" (presumed to be Henry J. Van Lennep).
