John C. Thompson letter to Justin Perkins in which Thompson responds to Perkins' letter. He remarks on Perkins' account of the prospects of religion in the eastern part of the state and writes about the honor they have of living in a time, "when Christ is riding forth in the chariot of his gospel." He agrees that something should be done to increase the standard of piety in college. Thompson also shares updates from his area and situation, noting the upcoming ordination of Daniel Crosby, his residence in a school, and his health. He mentions Hyde visiting the school and the revival in Hadley, and he says he has studied about as much as Perkins has.

William B. Whitney scrapbook containing items collected during his freshman and sophomore years at Amherst College. Formats of the contents vary from printed materials (such as invitations, programs, tickets, receipts, clippings, and schedules) to handwritten materials (like letters and course notes) to other ephemera (such as flowers, fabric, billiard cloth, ribbons, and cigarette packets). Whitney has written annotations adjacent to some included items. Materials provide glimpses into student life at Amherst College. Some items pertain to student groups like the Social Union, Alexandria, Athenæ, Glee Club, or the College chapter (Sigma) of Delta Kappa Epsilon. Other materials relate to academics, personal finances, physical statistics, or to local and college events such as Mountain Day, lecture courses, athletic competitions, commencement, and musical performances. Some included items are from or pertain to students of Smith College and Mount Holyoke Female Seminary.

Harrison O. Howland letter to Justin Perkins in which Howland writes as secretary of the (Amherst College) association of Friends. He states the original and continued object of the society "to excite and perpetuate a missionary spirits in our hearts & in the hearts of those with whom we associate." He writes regarding their feeling that this object would be promoted by correspondence with missionaries and asks Perkins to write them something that will increase interest and be of value in directing their course. He also asks particular questions relevant to students interested in becoming missionaries and updates Perkins on the current status of the society. The letter is on stationery that includes a printed lithograph of Amherst College by Moore's Lithography in Boston and signed "H.G. Van Lennep" (presumed to be Henry J. Van Lennep).

Alexander Wilson McClure letter to Justin Perkins expressing concern for Perkins' afflictions. McClure notes that in exchange for the photographic portrait Perkins had shared he was sending one of his own self, noting that time and disease has left their marks. McClure says that Perkins' portrait reminded him of the "good Amherst times" and shares his memories of when he and Perkins first knew each other and shares memories of a classmate, George Payson Barker, and the fashion at the time of wearing very wide shirts. McClure shares his opinion on the arrival for the summer of his wife's four sisters, comments on the state of his own health, and on his contributions to a new periodical out of Pittsburgh called the "Family Treasure," and notes Perkins' report on the Nestorian Mission.

Photographed are student protestors, including musicians, outside on the steps of Converse Hall. Several demonstrators have protest signs, and a banner in the background reads "Liberated." These photographs are assumed to have been taken by the College Photographer for the Office of Public Affairs (now the Office of Communications). Jim Gerhard was the College Photographer from the mid-1960s to 1971.
