Beginning with the program for the first Commencement in August 1822, commencement programs contain the order of exercises for commencement ceremonies. Since 1826, most programs also provide a list of candidates receiving their bachelor of arts degrees. Other information contained in programs has varied over the years. Amherst College Commencement program, 1826 August 23 Collegiate Institution faculty resolution regarding the sophomore class examinations, 1824 August 23 Humphrey, Heman, 1779-1861 A document stating that the faculty of the Amherst Collegiate Institution voted that the examination of the sophomore class was satisfactory and that the performance of many members of the class was commendable. It goes on to say that a few individuals did not possess the desired level of knowledge regarding some studies but most of the deficiencies can be attributed to want of health and none were so great as to render any public exceptions necessary. It states that the whole class advance to the standing of Junior Sophisters. The document is signed by Heman Humphrey on behalf of the faculty.
