Hopkins, Francis G.

Francis G. Hopkins letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Hopkins, a student of the Collegiate Institution, writes regarding his health and his plans for returning to the Institution. He states that his health was improving during his travels, but since arriving to this place he has become quite unwell. Therefore, he writes that he will not be returning this semester to Amherst, but should he regain his health he will probably return in the fall. He goes on to say that he did not pay his last term's bill, but it is his intention to have it settled soon and he is making arrangements immediately.

The document contains two lists of students recommended on two different dates in 1821 and includes each student's name, address, and age. There are also additional notes on the document.

Ephraim Evelith, a student of the Collegiate Institution, letter to the faculty in which Evelith asks that he be granted a dismissal. He states that for reasons best known only to himself, he wishes his connection with the Institution to end. A related document that restores Evelith to his position as a student is in Box 1 Folder 33 of this collection.

At the bottom of the diagram is written "Location SC- "1821-2," presumably to indicate that the information in the diagram pertains to South College and the 1821-1822 academic year. Additional unattributed notes relating to the occupants listed such as their class years are handwritten in pencil on the item.

Asa Eaton letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Eaton writes as clerk and on behalf of the Directors of the American Education Society. He states when the directors met on the 10th, Amherst College was appointed an examining committee of the Board and the young men recommended by Moore on October 1 were placed on their list of beneficiaries. He goes on to provide details regarding these students and the appropriations they will receive, including listing their names and aid amounts. He closes by certifying that the named students are beneficiaries of the American Education Society.

Nathan Lord certification regarding Harvey Backus Wilbur, 1835 June 23

Lord, Nathan, 1792-1870

Nathan Lord, President of Dartmouth College, letter to Hervey Wilbur in which Lord certifies that Wilbur's son, Hervey B. Wilbur of the freshman class at Dartmouth, is dismissed per his father's request. Lord states that Wilbur's habits of study have been somewhat exceptionable, and the faculty will throw no objection in the way of his admission to another institution. He writes that the faculty feel they should make this statement, and they express their hope that Wilbur will have opportunity to execute the purpose of greater diligence which they understand him to have formed.
