The notebook contains observations about the geology in various locations throughout the state with information about terrain and rock types. Notes about Hitchcock's travel are included, as are drawings complementing the notes about the geology. Specimens collected by himself and others are mentioned, and notes about texts related to geology are included. Edward Hitchcock geological survey notebook, 1830 October 1 to 1831 October 28 Report on the coal field of Bristol County and Rhode Island Hitchcock, Edward, 1793-1864 House document number 45, containing a report presented to the Massachusetts House of Representatives by Edward Hitchcock discussing a coal field in Bristol County, Massachusetts, and extending into Rhode Island. Hitchcock presents his arguments for why he believes this portion of land is in fact a coal field and describes specific coal beds that are part of the whole deposit. A chart detailing various coal localities is included. At the beginning of the report is an order that the portion of the report discussing the coal field be printed for the House in advance of the whole report, and a notice that this order was adopted March 2, 1853. Report on the coal field of Bristol County and Rhode Island Geology of the Hoosac Mountain: testimony of President Edward Hitchcock, before the legislative committee Hitchcock, Edward, 1793-1864 A report by Edward Hitchcock given before the Legislative Committee of Massachusetts on the topic of Hoosac Mountain. Hitchcock describes its geology specifically as it relates to the intended path of the Hoosac Tunnel. He describes the types of rock contained in the mountain, and what he believes can be expected when excavating the mountain. The final two pages of the document were not composed by Hitchcock and instead discuss the logistics and expenses of excavating the tunnel. Geology of the Hoosac Mountain: testimony of President Edward Hitchcock, before the legislative committee Report on certain points in the geology of Massachusetts Hitchcock, Edward, 1793-1864 House document number 39, a report presented to the Massachusetts House of Representatives by Edward Hitchcock discussing aspects of the geology of Massachusetts to which he was unable to give attention in his "Final Report on the Geology of Massachusetts." Subjects covered include the coal field of Bristol County and Rhode Island, beds of brown hematite and iron ore in Berkshire County, and marks of ancient glaciers in Massachusetts. Several illustrations are included, along with a map of drift and glacier striae in Hampden County, some of which are in color. Within the section on hematite and iron ore Hitchcock duplicates the text and images of his published article "Description of a brown coal deposit in Brandon, Vermont, with an attempt to determine the geological age of the principal hematite ore beds in the United States." The report includes a brief introduction by Massachusetts governor John H. Clifford to the Speaker of the House. The report is signed by Hitchcock from Amherst, Massachusetts on February 23, 1853. Drawings related to the geology of the state are inlcluded, and expenses incurred for May 1835 and September 1834 are listed. The first section of the diary lists scripture passages related to the deluge and destruction of the world. Several Latin passages from books, some of which are crossed out, are included within this section of the diary.
