She also writes about the illness in Amherst, about Emily Hitchcock's tendency to become ill when at Mount Holyoke Seminary, and inquires after a book on autumn leaves. Charles H. Hitchcock has added a note on the final page requesting a book on preserving animals so that they can "stuff a rat from Deerfield." The first letter, written by Edward Hitchcock and signed by Orra White Hitchcock, Catharine Hitchcock Storrs, Jane Elizabeth Hitchcock Putnam, and Emily Hitchcock, is dated October 6, 1860. In it, Hitchcock asks after Hitchcock Jr.'s trip, writes about small family matters, and mentions a trip the senior class at Amherst College will be taking to Vermont to study geology. The letter dated October 13, 1860 is written by Charles H. Hitchcock and Jane Elizabeth Hitchcock Putnam. Charles writes about renaming Dorset Mountain to Mount Aeolus and writes about taking home a "pocketful of bats" from the cave there. Jane inquires after Hitchcock Jr.'s journey.
