The portfolio has black lacquered boards, front cover has painted floral design including mother of pearl inlay. Inserted in the portfolio are sheets of stationery with "Paris" blind-stamped in the upper left corner. These sheets are identical to others on which Orra wrote letters home to her family during her time in Paris with her husband Edward in 1850. It is unclear if the portfolio was acquired during this trip. The latitude of one of the specimens is provided, but not the longitude. Hitchcock has noted who gave her the seaweed and when she received it.
