Tyler in which Perkins writes about the death of Stoddard from typhus fever. He responds to news from Tyler that he is again engaged in his work at the college (Amherst College). He asks Tyler to give his attention to preparing a memoir of Dr. Lobdell as Mr. Seelye has given the matter up. He also asks him to ride to Northampton and give his sympathy to Stoddard's friends and family there. Perkins remarks on letters by Tyler in the Congregationalist and responds to Tyler's hope about the result of the Presidential election. He says that to them there it seems the whole country (the United States) will soon be enslaved or the union will soon be severed. He also notes that the war between England and Persia does not greatly trouble the mission and provides updates on the mission and its schools. He expresses how much he enjoyed his recent visit in Ooroomiah (Urmia), shares his distress about Samuel based on a letter received from India, and reminds Perkins to keep him informed about Mar Shimon and Dr. Grant. He also writes regarding Mr. Taliatine and his system of teaching. He suggests Perkins ask Taliatine to visit to see his schools. He mentions the Prince, Armenians, Perkins' two sons, multiple members of the Nestorian Mission, Mr. Southgate, and Nazir Aly Khan's "fat son." He shares that their friends accomplished the journey through Kurdish country between Erzeroom (Erzurum) and Persia with his assistance. He remarks on past sicknesses and says that they hope they will suffer less sickness as they become more accustomed to the climate. Perkins goes on to provide updates on the state of the mission and its boarding school, and he writes about the "mohammedans" (Muslims) of Persia as a missionary field, mentioning Br. Merrick. They also write that they have heard of special interest in other schools, discuss prayers that have been offered, remark on the current mood of the village, and share news on individuals they visited or heard about in Boston. Sarah's grandmother Briggs, William, Mrs. Barrus, and Mr. and Mrs. Wight are all mentioned. The individuals mentioned are all likely related to Harriette Briggs Stoddard. He also says that they are still in suspense regarding Perkins' return and are anxious for further intelligence from America. He writes regarding the status of the mission's schools and the work he's been doing preaching and for the press. He notes that they have heard nothing from the Bible Society in regards to their applications.
