A Collegiate Charity Institution printed form letter in which recipients are asked to donate money to support the Institution. The letter is signed by Zephaniah Swift Moore and is addressed to Reverend Zenas L. Leonard of Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The letter details the founding of the Collegiate Institution and describes the Charity Fund, including the names of the Overseers of this Fund. It also discusses the current state of the Institution and a new subscription for the Institution. Below the signature of Moore are the terms of subscription, labeled "Form of Subscription" and dated June 28, 1822. The fund discussed in this letter and for which there is a form for subscription was commonly called the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription.

A letter from Zephaniah Swift Moore and Samuel F. (Fowler) Dickinson to Justin Ely in which Moore and Dickinson write on behalf of the Executive Committee of the Trustees of Amherst Academy to ask for Ely's patronage and aid for the Collegiate Charity Institution. They describe the institution including its mission, staff, and campus. They also discuss current needs for the institution such as buildings and expenses related to the college library. In asking for aid from Ely, they remark on the duty of all Christians to advance God's kingdom and relate this goal to the institution and its goal to increase gospel ministers. Also included is a typed transcript of the document. A note at the bottom indicates the letter was transcribed by Elaine D. Trehub in 2001.

A letter from Levi Hodge of Harvard University to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Hodge shares with Moore the proceedings of the last annual meeting of the Convention of the Colleges which took place in Boston on May 30 and 31, 1821. Hodge includes a transcription of the proceedings originally documented by Moses Stuart who was acting as scribe for the meeting. Provided are the names of attendees, the institutions the attendees are from, and the minutes of the meeting.

A petition from students in the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes regarding the tutor Lucius Field. The students write to Zephaniah Swift Moore, president of the College, and explain that they are dissatisfied with Field. They include the reasons for their dissatisfaction and ask that Moore take measures to secure another instructor as soon as possible. There are unattributed notes in pencil on this item.

Hopkins, Francis G.

Francis G. Hopkins letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Hopkins, a student of the Collegiate Institution, writes regarding his health and his plans for returning to the Institution. He states that his health was improving during his travels, but since arriving to this place he has become quite unwell. Therefore, he writes that he will not be returning this semester to Amherst, but should he regain his health he will probably return in the fall. He goes on to say that he did not pay his last term's bill, but it is his intention to have it settled soon and he is making arrangements immediately.

Asa Burton letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Burton asks for Moore's aid and influence in obtaining subscribers for a book Burton is proposing for publication. He states that he is sending three sheets for Moore to distribute to two named individuals and other gentlemen per his own judgement. Burton states that such a work as the proposed book is much needed and discusses its potential use for students of divinity, theology, and/or ethics. Burton goes on to discuss personal current events for his family and says he is glad to hear that Moore's institution in Amherst, the Collegiate Institution, is prospering. He closes with hopes that they be so faithful as to live near to God and sends his respects to Mrs. Moore and Colonel Graves. The proposed book Burton discusses in this letter is presumably Essays on Some of the First Principles of Metaphysics, Ethics and Theology which was published in 1824.

Zephaniah Swift Moore letter to the editor of the Hampden Journal in which Moore writes about the Institution (the Collegiate Institution) and requests that the editor publish documents Moore is enclosing regarding the Institution's petition to the Senate for a charter. Moore states that he heard that someone may have asked the editor not to publish anything relating to colleges and petition for charter, and he hopes that this is not true as he feels the public should have all the facts available. Moore also states that he is enclosing two dollars for the Hampden Journal to pay for a one year subscription and to credit towards their books. The enclosures noted in Moore's letter no longer accompany this item.

Josephus Wheaton letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore, 1823 May 18

Josephus Wheaton letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Wheaton encloses a petition to the Massachusetts legislature in support of granting charter to the Collegiate Institution. In the included petition, nine subscribers to the Charity Fund from Holliston, Massachusetts request that the Massachusetts legislature grant such powers as are usually given to the trustees of colleges to the Trustees of Amherst Academy. They describe the success of the Collegiate Institution under the direction of the Trustees of Amherst Academy and state that as they understand that said Trustees are about to petition to the legislature for charter, they request that the prayer of said petitions may be granted. The names of the nine petitioners are included at the end of the document. Before the petition, Wheaton includes a note to Moore explaining the enclosure and providing the names of the local subscribers to the Charity Fund who were not included in the petition and the reasons for their exclusion.

Benjamin M. Palmer letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Palmer addresses Moore as "President of the literary institution recently established at Amherst" (the Collegiate Institution). Palmer introduces John B. Van Dyke (presumably John Brevoor Van Dyck) as a member of his church who plans to attend the Institution. Palmer discusses Van Dyck's character, aspirations, and financial status. He writes that he has given Van Dyck thirty dollars which he thinks the Auxiliary Education Society will reimburse, and he has advised Van Dyck to apply for aid from the American Education Society for future funding. He asks that Moore give Van Dyck directions on how to proceed in making his application to the American Education Society and expresses his ardent desire for the prosperity of Moore's Institution and Moore himself.

Asa Eaton letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Eaton writes as clerk and on behalf of the Directors of the American Education Society. He states when the directors met on the 10th, Amherst College was appointed an examining committee of the Board and the young men recommended by Moore on October 1 were placed on their list of beneficiaries. He goes on to provide details regarding these students and the appropriations they will receive, including listing their names and aid amounts. He closes by certifying that the named students are beneficiaries of the American Education Society.

Zephaniah Swift Moore letter to the preceptors and Prudential Committee of Amherst Academy in which Moore writes on behalf of the faculty of the Collegiate Institution of Amherst regarding incidents of inappropriate behavior by Amherst Academy students on the grounds of the Collegiate Institution. Moore provides details regarding the inappropriate behavior which included drinking alcohol to excess, indecent and riotous behavior in and about the Collegiate Institution, and playing cards. He states that the faculty of the institution wanted to inform the preceptors and Prudential Committee of this behavior. He also states that the faculty of the Institution are united in their opinion that members of the Academy should not be in any room of the Institution after nine o'clock in the evening. The Amherst Academy students Moore discusses are Henry Hay, Edward Southworth, Charles W. Jenks, William H. Heath, Artemas Thompson, Charles H. Stedman, Joel Hamilton, and William G. Webster. Collegiate Institution students Dickinson (presumably Edward Dickinson or Appleton Dickinson) and Gray (presumably Philander Gray) are also described as being involved in the incidents.

Taylor comments on Lyman's good study habits, character, and religion in support of his admittance to the Institution.

A. Boies letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Boies introduces John B. Vandyke (presumably John Brevoor Van Dyck) as a man of Charleston, South Carolina desiring to unite with Moore's Institution, the Collegiate Institution in Amherst, Massachusetts. Boies states that Van Dyck is a man of amiable character and that the Auxiliary Education Society of South Carolina will probably defray Van Dyck's expenses during his collegiate course. Boies also comments on the success of the Institution thus far and sends his kind regards to Mrs. Moore. A. Boies likely refers to Artemis Boies although his identity could not be confirmed.

C.P. Grosvenor (Cyrus Pitt Grosvenor) letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Grosvenor discusses his recent time in New York and now Charleston, South Carolina attempting to obtain money, presumably for the Collegiate Institution in Amherst. He discusses his journey, his difficulties in securing donations, and his interactions with local clergy such as Reverend Dr. Palmer. Grosvenor states that his journey may not wholly be in vain as much interest has been excited in favor of Amherst among men who wish to send their sons to the North for education. He goes on to discuss particular young men who may come to Amherst to study. He also states that almost every gentlemen with whom he discusses the subject has expressed astonishment that the Massachusetts legislature has not yet granted a charter to the Institution. Grosvenor notes that should Moore need to communicate with him, he can find him in Baltimore, though first he is leaving for Savannah in the morning. He closes with kind regards for several named individuals in Amherst.

Minutes of the Convention of Colleges sent to Zephaniah Swift Moore, 1820 May 31

A copy of the "transactions of the Convention of Colleges" taken at an annual meeting held in the Boston Court House on May 31, 1820. The minutes provide the names of those present, including representatives from Burlington College, Harvard, Yale, Bowdoin College, Williams College, and Dartmouth. The document states that letters from other college presidents and professors who could not attend were read at the convention, and the names of those senders and their affiliated institutions are included in the minutes. The proceedings of the convention are provided including votes taken, delegated dissertation topics, reports given, a list of attendees who would partner with one another and correspond regarding their respective departments, and the decision that two attendees insert a notice of the meeting in the Daily Advertiser and a literary journal. The copy is signed by Edward Everett, acting as scribe, and is attested to by Levi Hedge, acting as secretary. After the minutes there is a note from F. Hall stating that the minutes were sent to this college with a request that it be read by the faculty and forwarded to the officers of Williams College, and thus he is sending it via mail to Zephaniah Swift Moore, President of Williams College. The identity of F. Hall could not be determined.
