The cover indicates it was "published by E. & A. Nelson and Co." "Whaling" by Arthur Nelson recounts the adventures of a whale ship near Pager Island, their attack by dogfish and subsequent catch of a whale. "Surrounded" by Elmer Nelson tells of the schooner "Skipper" as it is surrounded by many other schooners. The skipper draws its cannons, escapes to a harbor and drives the other schooners back. "Out Hunting" by Arthur Nelson is the story of a hunting party that goes out while their steamer ship is being repaired. While hunting they were confronted by a large buck. The world, volume 2, number 1 At the mast This story by an unidentified Nelson brother tells of a sea battle occurring in 1898 between the fictional Chipewa and Big Continent navies. Though undermanned and out-resourced, the Chipewa forces are led by the formidable Captain Harry Nelson. After substantial preparation of their cruiser, the "New York," the crew hopes to finally encounter a Big Continent squadron. After a few quiet days at sea, enemy ships approach at dawn and fire on the New York. Nelson and his men return fire with thirteen-inch guns and prepare for further combat. At this point the story ends abruptly, having set the reader up with expectations for more brave and daring exploits by Captain Nelson and the crew of the New York. At the mast War news, 1895 January 29 An issue of one of the many Nelson brothers' periodicals, presented in a two-column format and published by their fictitious enterprise, the War News Pub. Co. The Nelsons appear to have paid special attention to the illustrations in this particularly detailed issue and several include red and blue color detail. The opening story, "The Great B.C. Telescope," tells in great detail of a new telescope being mounted at the fictional Allentown. The story includes detailed illustrations of portions of the telescope. Other stories report on battles, trapping, naval and railroad developments, and a purchase by the Nelson Brothers of the seed stock of W.R. Nelson, seedsman, for the high price of 30,000 dollars. The main stories are followed by a profiles of the characters, skier Jimmy Allen and William J. Little (Arthur Nelson's alter ego). The issue ends with news briefs from around the Nelson brothers' world. War news, 1895 January 29 The popies cruse [sic] This unattributed story tells of two fictional warships called Popie. The ships are engaged in several battles and are led by the Nelson brothers' character Ethan Allen. Battles at sea are described in much detail. Allen's son Jimmy Allen features prominently in the story and even accompanies his father on one of the sea battles. This small book features illustrations with some color details and includes portraits of Ethan Allen and Jimmy Allen at the end of the book. The popies cruse [sic]
