The Hampshire Gazette April 7, 1824 issue which includes an article titled "Amherst Institution." The article includes the December 24, 1823 statement made by the Committee consisting of Alvan Hyde, Samuel Shepard, Ezra Starkweather, Daniel Noble, and Thaddeus Pomeroy acting on behalf of the Trustees of Williams College. The Committee asks that the General Court of Massachusetts not grant the Trustees of Amherst Academy a charter for the establishment of a college in Amherst, Massachusetts. They outline their reasons for this request, including the potential damage to Williams College that another similar incorporated institution in the western part of Massachusetts could cause.

Amherst College

A pamphlet printed as an extra sheet by the American Statesman which includes observations made by the Massachusetts Senate during a two-day discussion held when a report was given by a Senate Committee in favor of granting charter to Amherst College. The pamphlet includes observations from Senate members Leland, Mills, Adams, Noyes, Keyes, Tufts, Fiske, Austin, Richardson, Hubbard, Thaxter, and Hoyt. Topics discussed include the Charity Fund and other financial contributions to Amherst College, the Collegiate Institution (also known as Amherst College), and Williams College. Ultimately it is noted that the report was accepted, giving leave to bring a bill forward.

It provides background on the current state of the petition, the Collegiate Institution (Amherst College), the Charity Fund, a previous proposal for the removal of Williams College from Williamstown, Massachusetts, and controversy over potential negative effects to Williams College should charter be granted. Davis argues in favor of incorporating Amherst College.

Sprague, Joseph E., 1782-1852

A pamphlet of a report made by Legislator Joseph E. Sprague of the Massachusetts House of Representatives regarding the Amherst Collegiate Institution petition for charter. Sprague writes on behalf of the Committee of the House of Representatives to whom was committed the Senate's "Report of the Joint Committee on the Petition of the Trustees of Amherst Academy." He discusses the October 1824 meeting on the topic. Sprague also writes regarding evidence relating to the Charity Fund, the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription, and the financial status of the Collegiate Institution. He concludes with the Committee recommendation that charter be granted with a provision by which Williams College might be united with the Institution within seven years. Several times throughout the pamphlet, Sprague references another document which he states accompanies the report. The accompanying document referred to is "Appendix to report of the committee appointed to inquire into facts relative to the Amherst Collegiate Institution, 1825 January 8" in Box 2, Folder 8 of this collection.

Charity Fund (Amherst, Mass.)

A volume containing 11 pamphlets "bound at the expense of Mr. Frank W. Stearns." An unattributed typed table of contents is included at the beginning of the volume and there are unattributed handwritten notes on the pamphlets. The pamphlets primarily pertain to the controversy regarding the suggested removal of Williams College from Williamstown, Massachusetts, the proposed chartering of the Collegiate Institution, or the Charity Fund. The pamphlets contain contributions from various individuals, including: Lucius Boltwood, John Morton Greene, Rowland Ayres, Christopher Cushing, Joseph Gowing Kendall, Nathaniel Smith, John Fiske, Hezekiah W. Strong, J.E. Trask, Rufus Graves, Paul Willard, Daniel Davis, Joseph E. Sprague, John Leland, Sherman Leland, Redford Webster, and Zephaniah Swift Moore.

Williams College

A newspaper clipping of an article published in The Springfield Daily News about why Smith College was the first college to be located in Northampton, Massachusetts. The article describes how Amherst College, Williams College, and the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst ended up in the towns in which they are located rather than in Northampton, which had been under consideration as a location for all three colleges at different points in time, or in Springfield which had been under consideration for UMass. Also discussed is how Smith College came to be located in Northampton rather than in Hatfield, Massachusetts.

A pamphlet of a statement regarding the petition by the Trustees of Amherst Academy requesting the incorporation of the Amherst Collegiate Charity Institution. The statement discusses the prior controversy over the proposal to remove Williams College from Williamstown, Massachusetts and the circumstances of the Amherst Collegiate Institution's founding and progress. The document argues against incorporation of the college, particularly because of its potential negative effect on Williams College.

The October 27, 1818 issue of the Hampshire Gazette and Public Advertiser. Among the articles included is one that discusses the controversy regarding the removal of Williams College to Amherst, Massachusetts, the convention at which it was recommended "that suitable measures be adopted by the Trustees of Amherst Academy for the establishment of a College in connection with the charitable institution," and the possibility that, against the wishes of Williams College, the Legislature might establish another College in Hampshire County.

A broadside of a statement made by the inhabitants of the town of Williamstown, Massachusetts regarding the removal of Williams College from Williamstown as proposed by the Trustees of Williams College. The statement is addressed to the General Court of Massachusetts and argues against the removal of the college, citing statistics regarding Williams College and other colleges in the area. The statement also discusses Williamstown and Northampton, Massachusetts, the town to which the trustees proposed Williams College be moved. The broadside ends with a statement that at a legal meeting of Williamstown inhabitants on December 27, 1819 the attendees voted unanimously that the Memorial (the statement) be presented to the General Court at their next session as expressive of the feelings of the town on the subject. Stephen Hosford attests to the statement as Town Clerk.

Pamphlet of extracts from several documents created as an appendix to a report made by a Massachusetts legislative committee on the Amherst Collegiate Institution. The sections of the pamphlet are labeled A-F and include copies of A Constitution and System of By-Laws of the Charity Fund from May 23, 1818, the Subscription for the Collegiate Charity Institution in Amherst, Massachusetts from June 28, 1822, also called the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription, a blank Charity Fund subscription form, the July 6, 1819 Guaranty Bond of David Parsons, Jarib White, Calvin Merrill, Enos Baker, John Leland, Samuel Fowler Dickinson, Elijah Boltwood, Hezekiah Wright Strong, and Joseph Church which notes their obligation of a sum of fifteen thousand dollars for the founding of the Charity Fund, notes from Rufus Graves regarding Charity Fund subscriptions, J.E. Trask, Nathaniel Smith, and John Fisk note regarding subscriptions to the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription made by minors and females, and the Zephaniah Swift Moore and Trustees of Williams College request that Williams College be moved to Northampton, Massachusetts and legislative notes on the request. The report that refers to this pamphlet as an accompanying document was written by Joseph E. Sprague and is in Box 3 Folder 17 of this collection.

Williams College

A pamphlet with remarks from an unknown author on the controversy of whether or not Williams College should be moved from Williamstown, Massachusetts to Northampton, Massachusetts. The author writes regarding an address made by the Trustees of Williams College proposing that the college be removed from Williamstown and an address by a committee of Berkshire men countering the trustees and stating that Williams College should stay in Williamstown. The pamphlet outlines the points made by the committee and examines those points against statements made by the trustees and statistics regarding Williams College and other similar institutions in the area. The pamphlet advocates for the removal of Williams College from Williamstown based on evidence presented within.

Hubbard, Henry

A pamphlet describing the results of a meeting of men from Berkshire County that took place on October 6, 1819 regarding the proposition to move Williams College from Williamstown to Northampton, Massachusetts. The pamphlet begins with a description of the meeting and includes the resolutions that were adopted at the meeting. One such resolution is the appointment of Daniel Noble, Colonel Henry W. Dwight, and William C. Jarvis to a committee to prepare and publish an address expressive of the sentiments of the meeting. The pamphlet also contains this address to the public in which Noble, Dwight, and Jarvis advocate for Williams College to remain in Williamstown and address the arguments in the recent petition made to the legislature by the Trustees of Williams College which proposed that it be removed.

A clipping from the July 8, 1934 issue of The Springfield Sunday Union and Republican of an article written by Yale Bulkeley regarding a potential move of Williams College from Williamstown to Amherst or Northampton, Massachusetts that was debated in the early part of the 19th century. Bulkeley also briefly discusses the incorporation of Amherst College.

Copy of Ebenezer Kellogg letter to Alvan Hyde, 1821 June 21

Kellogg, Ebenezer, 1789-1846

A typed copy of an E. Kellogg (presumably Ebenezer Kellogg) letter to "Rev. Dr. Hyde" (presumably Alvan Hyde) in which Kellogg writes regarding the resignation of Zephaniah Swift Moore from Williams College and the reluctance of the senior class to remain at the college. Kellogg states that he does not want to intrude on the deliberations of the Committee, to which Hyde presumably belongs, but that he wishes to provide his views on the subject of the future of Williams College, the commencement, and the senior class. He remarks on the situation and provides his opinions, stating that the chance for another class at Williams might be improved if it were known that another president was appointed. He states his belief that even those connected with the Institution at Amherst (the Collegiate Institution) would not find it desirable for Williams College to now be discontinued. The source and date of this transcript are unknown.

A pamphlet of a report made by Legislator Joseph E. Sprague of the Massachusetts House of Representatives regarding the Amherst Collegiate Institution petition for charter. Sprague writes on behalf of the Committee of the House of Representatives to whom was committed the Senate's "Report of the Joint Committee on the Petition of the Trustees of Amherst Academy." He states that the House Committee met in October 1824 in Amherst to deliberate on the subject, and he provides background on that meeting and the petition. Sprague goes on to write regarding the inquiries made by the Committee and evidence found regarding the fifty thousand dollar Charity Fund, another subscription for the fund commonly called the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription, and the financial status of the Collegiate Institution. Sprague concludes that the recommendation of the Committee is that charter be granted for the Collegiate Institution with a provision by which Williams College might be united with the Institution within seven years and a provision that should they be united, each college should have an equal voice. He explains the reasons for this opinion. Several times throughout the pamphlet, Sprague references another document which he sates accompanies the report. Williams College memoranda regarding honorary and secondary degrees and other business

Williams College

An unattributed memoranda with a list of Williams College alumni and a note next to their names stating "wish for second degree." Also included are brief notes stating that Joel Tyler Benedict and Amos Bassett, who both received honorary degrees from Williams College, are to be proposed for degrees. Additional notes regarding student bills and proposals for the Trustees are also included. On the back of the memoranda are the proposals regarding Benedict and Bassett in Latin.
