Abstract | A transcription of three letters written by Emily Dickinson. The transcription is part of the collection of transcriptions of Dickinson's poems and letters produced by Todd for publication in a volume edited by her. Most transcriptions are in Todd’s own hand; some are typed, and some were transcribed by other individuals. Editor's notes precede each transcribed letter stating the possible recipient and/or the context of the letter and a date; the first to Miss (Elizabeth) Hoar upon her engagement to Samuel Bowles which begins "Dear Friend, Here is more than one deluge", the second to Elizabeth Hoar's parents Ebenezer and Caroline Brooks Hoar declining the invitation to the wedding of Samuel Bowles and Elizabeth Hoar which begins "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Bowles, I should hardly dare to risk", and the final letter to Samuel Bowles upon the engagement of his brother Charles Bowles which begins "Dear Friend, I am sure you will guide the note". |
Notes | The item is undated. The date range is based on the year Emily Dickinson died and the year the final volume of Dickinson's poems and letters that Mabel Loomis Todd edited was published. |
