Abstract | Gottlieb Hoernle letter to Justin Perkins in which Hoernle writes regarding a variety of topics including his English language learning, the Perkinses reaching Urmia safely, their journey back to Tabreez (Tabriz) after they left the Perkinses, the Koordish (Kurdish) language and dialects, their conviction that a translation of gospel into Kurdish is possible but would be useless, their letter to the society (Basel Evangelical Missionary Society) expressing this conviction, the possible leaving of Mr. Haas and Mr. Wolters for Tehran, a musical box for Perkins, housekeeping, his headaches, and how they generally spend their days. He also discusses Gabriel who is leaving and their other Nestorian servant who also planned to return to Urmia. Hoernle says that he refused to allow him to do so until they found a replacement and describes beating the man after he said he was still going. |
