Abstract | Eben. (Ebenezer) Burgess letter to Justin Perkins in which Burgess writes regarding their journey to Ahmednuggar (Ahmadnagar), the Mission and its schools, and his current status. He discusses the prejudices of the people towards missionaries, writes of the excitement caused by the conversion of two Brahman, and discusses the effects of local governments on missions. He also writes of British expansion and current political tensions between China and England. Burgess updates Perkins on matters in America, mentioning the Presbyterian Church, the Jackson party, the "good old ship" Constitution, and the antislavery party. He also comments on Brother Merrick's marriage and Professor Tyler's engagement. On the last page of the letter, Mary Burgess addresses Charlotte Bass Perkins and Jerusha Stocking, writing of the daily life of the missionaries and their families at her station. She mentions Miss Farrar, Mr. and Mrs. French, Mr. Abbot, Mr. Ballentine, and Mr. Webster. |
