Abstract | Charles Stoddard letter to Justin Perkins in which Stoddard responds to letters from Perkins. He shares his view that missionary work should principally have to do with the relations of men and God and little to do with other efforts at moral reform. Stoddard references the documents Perkins sent in response to misinformation from returned missionaries Messrs. Jones and Merrick. He writes regarding Merrick and assures Perkins that the Committee and officers of the Board (American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions) have full confidence in the Nestorian Mission. He also writes about his brother and sister-in-law (David Tappan and Harriette Briggs Stoddard) and current affairs in the United States: "the iniquitous project of annexing Texas as a slave territory," the controversy with Great Britain over Oregon, a lack of revivals, and Prof. Bush coming out as Swedenborgian. |
