Abstract
A sermon by Edward Hitchcock in which he discusses the ways in which he believes Jesus Christ attempts to "knock on the door" of men's hearts. Revelations 3:20 is quoted. Hitchcock claims that Jesus attempts to connect with men and get them to leave sin behind in four different ways. He explains that the first is to move man with the Holy Spirit, the second is the Bible, the third is "ordinance," and the fourth is through "providence." By ordinance, Hitchcock means keeping the sabbath and preaching and by providence Hitchcock means an alteration of men's circumstances from success to poverty and failure to remind them of their dependence on God. Hitchcock has noted on the first page the dates and locations where he delivered this sermon as well as Bible chapters and hymns related to the sermon.
